Hello.
We are Magok Station Seoul Dia Dental Clinic,
providing trustworthy care and warm explanations.
The morning air has gotten quite cold lately, hasn’t it?
It’s November, the season when our hands naturally go into our pockets.
Day by day, the wind changes,
and it’s a time when a warm cup of coffee feels even more appreciated.
At times like this, we hope you’ll take it slow,
and look after both your body and mind with a little more ease.^^
Today, we’d like to explain the process of taking a tooth impression.
In the previous post, we talked about what impression-taking is.
Simply put, it is a precise design process that copies the inside of your mouth with no more than a 1 mm margin of error!
In other words, it is the starting point of dental treatment and a key step that determines the final quality.
If you haven’t seen Parts 1 and 2 yet,
please review them through the links below—it will make understanding much easier.
So today, let’s get into it:
“How does the tooth impression process actually take place?”
We’ll explain it in an easy way, Magok Station Seoul Dia Dental Clinic style!
Copying the inside of my mouth exactly?!
Tooth impression-taking process
Step 1. Thoroughly check the oral condition

Before taking an impression, the condition of the mouth must be checked first.
That’s because even small issues such as cavities, gum inflammation, or chipped teeth
can interfere with an accurate impression.
At Seoul Dia Dental Clinic, before taking the impression,
the teeth are adjusted and the gums are stabilized
so that impression-taking can be performed in the most ideal condition.
Step 2. Choose a tray that fits my mouth perfectly

The “tray” that holds the impression material is like a mold for fish-shaped pastries.
If the mold is too large, the material spills out,
and if it is too small, the teeth are not captured properly.
That is why Seoul Dia Dental Clinic uses not only standard trays
but also patient-customized trays.
Since small differences can change the final result,
our principle is: “Precision starts with the tray!”
Step 3. Prepare the impression-taking material! (Mixing the impression material)

The “impression material” used for taking an impression is a soft, jelly-like material.
Once placed in the mouth, it hardens within a few minutes
and reproduces the shape of the teeth exactly.
Because timing is everything,
temperature, concentration, and viscosity are carefully adjusted.
Step 4. Place the tray and take the impression

The impression material is filled into the tray,
then gently placed in the mouth.
At this point, you may feel as if your mouth is a bit full,
but there is no pain at all.
It feels roughly like putting a spoonful of jelly in your mouth.
Usually, after waiting about 2 to 3 minutes, the impression material hardens,
and your tooth shape is captured exactly inside it.
This is today’s main subject: the impression body (tooth impression)!
Step 5. Careful inspection of the completed impression

At Seoul Dia Dental Clinic, nothing is done carelessly.
After removing the impression, we use magnification to carefully check the margins, gum line,
and whether there are any air bubbles.
If anything is even slightly lacking, we take it again.
Even if it is a little inconvenient,
it is because we believe that “there is no good prosthetic work without an accurate impression.”
Step 6. Create a plaster model or digital scan

Magok-dong dental clinic_Plaster model
Plaster is poured into the confirmed impression body,
creating a 3D model that reproduces the actual shape of the mouth.
These days, we also carry out digital impression-taking
using an oral scanner.
In other words, we achieve both the precision of the traditional method
and the speed of the digital method at the same time.
Once this step is complete, fabrication of customized dental prosthetics
(such as crowns, inlays, and bridges) begins.
