Hello.
We are Seoul Dia Dental Clinic at Magok Station,
a clinic that never overlooks even the smallest changes inside the mouth.
In Part 1 last time,
we clearly explained “what fluoride actually does,” didn’t we?
Now, let’s continue with [Part 2: Types of fluoride and how to choose by situation].
“There are so many types of fluoride…
what on earth am I supposed to use?”
Fluoride toothpaste, fluoride gargle, fluoride rinse, fluoride varnish…
Just by the names, they sound like types of detergent,
and the explanations all feel pretty much the same,
so when you go to buy one, it feels a bit unclear… right?
So in today’s Part 2,
we’ll organize the types of fluoride using the easiest criteria,
and give you only the essential information
so you can judge at a glance which one you should use.
Now, let’s focus for just 3 minutes and learn together!
Types of fluoride in an easy-to-understand way
Fluoride is broadly divided into “fluoride used at home” and “fluoride treatment at the dental clinic.”
Daily fluoride used at home
- Strengthening gradually over time, every day
Professional fluoride application at the clinic (varnish)
- Intensive care with a strong boost all at once
If you think of skincare,
it’s like the difference between a daily cream and an ampoule.
- Fluoride used at home (Daily Care)
① Fluoride toothpaste (1,000~1,450 ppm)

Magok Station Dental Clinic_Toothpaste
This is the most basic and essential item.
It has the most reliable cavity-prevention effect.
It is also effective at relieving tooth sensitivity,
and is recommended for use twice a day.
Who is it good for?
People who easily get cavities,
people who snack often,
and people with sensitive teeth—it's almost essential.
A pea-sized amount is enough.
“More is better” is absolutely not the case.
② Fluoride gargle (fluoride rinse) (about 200~900 ppm)
![Magok Station Dental Clinic_“Not all fluoride is the same!” [Part 2. Types of fluoride and how to choose by situation] image 2](https://pub-9f2bb3498faf4d1d8714b41df24753e3.r2.dev/content/clinics/archive/rlg13v0fli/naver_blog/dia_dental/assets/by_hash/511802bec79cdfae087af9cb1ea8ad877e311c3a03533498f905c47893fe8ef9.png)
Magok-dong Dental Clinic_Gargle
This is used like a gargle after brushing.
It reaches even between the teeth.
It is especially effective for concerns about bad breath and for orthodontic patients.
Who do we recommend it for?
-
People undergoing orthodontic treatment
-
People whose mouths often feel dry
-
People who easily get cavities between the teeth
It is perfect for these cases.
However, do not rinse with water right after using the gargle!
That will take away the fluoride’s effect.
③ Low-fluoride and high-fluoride children’s toothpaste
![Magok Station Dental Clinic_“Not all fluoride is the same!” [Part 2. Types of fluoride and how to choose by situation] image 3](https://pub-9f2bb3498faf4d1d8714b41df24753e3.r2.dev/content/clinics/archive/rlg13v0fli/naver_blog/dia_dental/assets/by_hash/4263013171a2414272b2855e57702469969018190b430265eb871aa2b535656c.png)
Magok Station Dental Clinic_Children’s toothpaste
Because children develop cavities more easily than adults,
it is important to use a fluoride concentration suited to their stage of growth.
For children under 3, use an amount even smaller than a pea.
For ages 3–6, use a pea-sized amount.
Be sure to make sure they do not swallow it after brushing.
Children’s toothpaste is not automatically weak.
Checking the age labeling is essential.
- Professional fluoride application at the dental clinic (Professional Care)
① Fluoride varnish (about 22,600 ppm)
![Magok Station Dental Clinic_“Not all fluoride is the same!” [Part 2. Types of fluoride and how to choose by situation] image 4](https://pub-9f2bb3498faf4d1d8714b41df24753e3.r2.dev/content/clinics/archive/rlg13v0fli/naver_blog/dia_dental/assets/by_hash/cc8ca7d904f84a66deb8823317a4b6e9e00ec62b2125ca0f4663e98ee7883fb8.png)
Magok Station Dental Clinic_Varnish
Varnish, with a concentration about 15–20 times higher than home fluoride,
is a professional intensive treatment applied at the dental clinic.
It rapidly strengthens the enamel,
immediately reduces sensitivity,
and is very effective for preventing cavities in children.
It is also very effective for adults in cases involving orthodontics, gum recession, and sensitivity.
Who would benefit from it?
-
People with a history of cavities
-
People who often eat sweets or snacks
-
People whose roots are exposed due to gum recession
-
Children and adolescents
-
Everyone undergoing orthodontic treatment
This treatment takes only 3–5 minutes.
It forms a hard coating, maintaining a protective barrier all day.
② High-fluoride gel, foam (dental use)
![Magok Station Dental Clinic_“Not all fluoride is the same!” [Part 2. Types of fluoride and how to choose by situation] image 5](https://pub-9f2bb3498faf4d1d8714b41df24753e3.r2.dev/content/clinics/archive/rlg13v0fli/naver_blog/dia_dental/assets/by_hash/12412aea06ead90156dfe952c590e3aaa855da70c458b7be0c2c2f4674bd84c2.png)
Magok Station Dental Clinic_Fluoride gel
This is a method where gel is placed in a tray and the teeth are briefly immersed in it.
It used to be commonly used,
but in recent years, in terms of effectiveness, durability, and convenience,
a “
varnish” is much superior, so most dental clinics mainly use varnish.
Then which fluoride should I use?
- I easily get cavities
![Magok Station Dental Clinic_“Not all fluoride is the same!” [Part 2. Types of fluoride and how to choose by situation] image 6](https://pub-9f2bb3498faf4d1d8714b41df24753e3.r2.dev/content/clinics/archive/rlg13v0fli/naver_blog/dia_dental/assets/by_hash/6c3cc01d94d6caa39d6ddb2abac2f711eb1db6cc8ac1b0f882142326e0a10c28.png)
Magok Station Dental Clinic_Cavities
→ Home fluoride (toothpaste) + dental varnish together
If you are prone to cavities, fluoride is not a “choice” but an “essential care.”
- My teeth are sensitive
![Magok Station Dental Clinic_“Not all fluoride is the same!” [Part 2. Types of fluoride and how to choose by situation] image 7](https://pub-9f2bb3498faf4d1d8714b41df24753e3.r2.dev/content/clinics/archive/rlg13v0fli/naver_blog/dia_dental/assets/by_hash/a971e6e4327d1251f2d6cee2dfe03496e0da7cb1bc57f73a75c1ef988b23c039.png)
Magok Station Dental Clinic_Sensitive teeth
→ Fluoride toothpaste + varnish highly recommended
Because fluoride blocks dentinal tubules,
the sensitivity symptoms are relieved quickly.
- I am undergoing orthodontic treatment
![Magok Station Dental Clinic_“Not all fluoride is the same!” [Part 2. Types of fluoride and how to choose by situation] image 8](https://pub-9f2bb3498faf4d1d8714b41df24753e3.r2.dev/content/clinics/archive/rlg13v0fli/naver_blog/dia_dental/assets/by_hash/af7be1c654b24d90d53ebc67dd9d7b73cdc554faa55f85c112a2d1a58f1028d5.png)
Magok Station Dental Clinic_Orthodontics
→ Fluoride toothpaste + fluoride gargle + varnish
Orthodontic treatment increases the rate of cavities between teeth by more than three times.
For orthodontic patients, fluoride is almost like “insurance.”
- Children and adolescents
![Magok Station Dental Clinic_“Not all fluoride is the same!” [Part 2. Types of fluoride and how to choose by situation] image 9](https://pub-9f2bb3498faf4d1d8714b41df24753e3.r2.dev/content/clinics/archive/rlg13v0fli/naver_blog/dia_dental/assets/by_hash/a1d97759d57fc1de419bcd935b292079e09cbd4cfc7caf0e49a512c667f614e0.png)
Magok Station Dental Clinic_Children
→ Age-appropriate toothpaste + regular varnish care
This has the greatest cavity-prevention effect.
For teeth in the growth stage, fluoride works immediately.
- My mouth often feels dry
![Magok Station Dental Clinic_“Not all fluoride is the same!” [Part 2. Types of fluoride and how to choose by situation] image 10](https://pub-9f2bb3498faf4d1d8714b41df24753e3.r2.dev/content/clinics/archive/rlg13v0fli/naver_blog/dia_dental/assets/by_hash/82abc1f271fca50a338ecef196aea15af70af803b0f5c2fc7646b0805cbb192f.png)
Magok Station Dental Clinic_Dry mouth
→ Add fluoride gargle
If there is not enough saliva, the progression of cavities is three times faster,
so it is a good idea to supplement with gargle.
Today’s key summary
-
Home fluoride is for daily care, and dental fluoride is for intensive care
-
Fluoride toothpaste is the basic option, and fluoride gargle is added depending on the situation
-
Fluoride varnish is the best in terms of effectiveness, durability, and prevention
-
Cavities, orthodontics, sensitivity, children, and dry mouth all require fluoride care
-
Choosing the right combination by purpose and situation is the most effective
