Precautions After Dental Fluoride Application

1. No water or food for 30 minutes

Right after varnish is applied to the tooth surface,

it starts to harden quickly as it meets saliva.

However, it still needs at least 30 minutes of settling time

to become fully stable.

Even a sip of water at this time

can slightly disturb the coating layer.

In other words, for the 30 minutes right after varnish application,

you can think of it as a quiet “settling period” inside the mouth.

If you avoid drinking water, gulping down beverages, and snacking for a little while,

the fluoride coating will adhere much more firmly and last longer.

Just hold off for 30 minutes.

This time determines half of the varnish’s effect.

2. On the same day, choose soft foods instead of hot or hard foods

Even if the varnish has hardened,

until the coating layer is fully stabilized,

it is still sensitive to strong temperature changes and chewing force.

So on the day of varnish application,

it’s best to take a break from foods like hot broth or steaming stew

that rapidly raise the temperature inside the mouth.

Please also avoid foods that rely on being hard,

such as dried squid, short ribs, or almonds.

For that day, a soft diet is

the best choice for safely protecting the fluoride coating layer.

3. Brushing on the same day should be a light sweep, not a forceful scrub

On the day of varnish application,

the most common mistake is brushing too hard.

“Since fluoride was applied, shouldn’t I brush extra well?”

No~ It’s actually the opposite!

Brushing with strong pressure can make the coated surface come off more easily,

so on that day, it’s best to brush lightly,

as if gently sweeping the surface.

Use a soft-bristle toothbrush,

remove almost all pressure around the root area,

and move your hand with the feeling of “tidying” rather than “scrubbing.”

From the next day onward, you can return to your usual brushing routine without any problem.

4. A yellowish or semi-transparent tint after varnish? 100% normal

but a normal sign that the fluoride coating has been properly applied.

5. For one day, avoid mouthwash, whitening products, and strong刺激
