Hello.
We make dental topics easy to understand, and solutions precise.
This is Seoul Dia Dental Clinic at Magok Station.
In Part 1,
we looked at why teeth crack, from wintertime trauma to everyday habits.
If you haven’t read it yet, start with the post below first,
and today’s content will flow much more smoothly.
Now, let’s begin Part 2 in earnest.
The symptoms that appear when a tooth has cracked
can feel like very “ordinary discomfort,”
so many people tend to overlook them without thinking.
But a crack in a tooth is not something that simply passes like a cold.
The problem is that if you ignore it, the crack can deepen further.
So today, I’ll organize the symptoms of a cracked tooth in an easy way.
Symptoms that appear when a tooth has cracked
- A sharp jolt or brief tingling pain only when chewing

Magaok-dong dental clinic_Pain when chewing food
This is the most common, but also the most overlooked symptom.
You feel fine most of the time,
but when you chew hard foods,
or when pressure is applied in a certain direction,
and you suddenly feel a pain like, “Ow! What was that?”
that is a typical sign of a cracked tooth.
Why does this pain happen?
If there is a crack in the tooth, pressure enters the crack when you chew,
and tiny刺激 are transmitted to the nerve.
So even if the tooth seems fine most of the time, the pain appears suddenly and briefly when chewing.
In particular, people like this should be careful.
- Increased sensitivity to cold and hot things

Magaok-dong dental clinic_Stinging pain when drinking a cold beverage
When a crack forms, dentin is more likely to become exposed,
so the tooth reacts sensitively to changes in cold and hot temperatures.
A sharp sting when drinking iced Americano
One particular tooth hurting more than others in hot soup
A cold sensation even from a passing breeze
These symptoms may not be simple sensitivity;
they can be a sign that the crack is progressing closer to the nerve.
- Pain that becomes twice as strong when something hot is followed by something cold

If you eat warm food and then drink cold water right away,
do you get a sudden, intense pain?
This often appears in cases where the crack has progressed a bit more.
Teeth repeatedly expand and contract as temperatures change,
and a cracked tooth transmits these changes more sensitively.
That is why pain becomes more intense with a “relative temperature difference.”
- Intermittent gum swelling or pain when pressed

Magaok-dong dental clinic_Gum swelling
If the crack gets deeper, bacteria can enter through the crack
and cause inflammation around the root.
So the following signs may appear.
-
Gums that swell often and then go down
-
A dull ache when pressed
-
A sudden, unexplained feeling that the gums have “popped” swollen
At this stage, the crack may already be progressing,
so a dental examination is needed.
- The tooth feels strangely uncomfortable

Magaok-dong dental clinic_A strangely uncomfortable and unstable feeling
It doesn’t feel loose back and forth,
but there are times when it feels oddly uncomfortable and unstable.
In patients’ words…
“It feels like the tooth is microscopically loose.”
“It feels like something is resonating inside when I chew.”
“The feeling of hard things touching it feels different.”
These sensations are also often accompanied by a crack.
- Repeated tooth sensitivity with no clear cause

Magaok-dong dental clinic_Repeated tooth sensitivity
It’s fine in the morning, then sensitive at lunch,
fine in the evening, then sensitive again tomorrow…
This back-and-forth sensitivity is
a classic sign seen in the early stage of a crack.
With cavities, pain tends to be persistent,
but with a crack, the reaction changes depending on the way force is applied,
the timing, and the type of stimulation.
Today’s key summary
A cracked tooth is not visible on the outside,
but the signals your body sends are quite clear.
-
Sharp pain only when chewing → top sign to suspect a crack
-
Sensitive to cold/hot刺激 → the crack has approached near the nerve
-
Gums that swell easily → possible entry point for bacteria through the crack
-
Repeated sensitivity with no clear cause → possible early-stage crack progression
All of these signs mean
“this is not just temporary discomfort; the crack is progressing.”

Seoul Dia Dental Clinic at Magok Station
Seoul Dia Dental Clinic at Magok Station
uses 3D CT to check the internal crack path,
microscopic crack scans to detect hidden cracks,
and bite analysis to examine the cause of the force that creates cracks.
With winter trauma accidents being more common these days,
if your teeth are sending unusually sensitive signals,
even a simple check-up can be very helpful.
In tomorrow’s Part 3, we’ll look at what treatment is needed
depending on the depth of the tooth crack.
