Hello.
We are Seoul Dia Dental, responsible for healthy smiles at Magok Station.
This is the topic many people have probably wondered about at least once—
Should wisdom teeth be removed, or not?
"Don't wisdom teeth have to be removed no matter what?"
"I heard somewhere that if they don't hurt, you can just leave them alone."
Actually, both are not entirely correct.ㅎㅎ
They do not always have to be removed,
and they are not something you can simply leave alone just because they do not hurt.
There are clear standards for wisdom tooth extraction.
If you do not know those standards, you may end up removing a tooth that did not need to be removed,
or leaving a tooth that should have been removed in place.
So we prepared this at Dia Dental.
The standards for wisdom tooth extraction,
we will explain them one by one over 6 parts.
First story,
let's take a look together now.

Should wisdom teeth really be removed?
When wisdom teeth come up at the dentist,
the reactions are usually one of two.
"Aren't they going to have to be removed anyway?"
Or, "It doesn't hurt right now, so do I really need to remove it now?"
...But here's the thing.
Just because it is a wisdom tooth does not mean it must always be removed.
If the conditions are right,
leaving it alone may actually be the better choice.
Cases where extraction is not necessary are as follows.

Magok Dental_Cases where wisdom teeth do not need to be removed
- When it has grown straight up
If the wisdom tooth is not lying sideways or tilted,
and has positioned itself straight like the other molars,
the chance of pressing against adjacent teeth or causing gum inflammation is low.
In such cases, there is no real reason to touch it.
- When there is enough space
If there is enough room in the jawbone for the wisdom tooth to settle,
the risk of it pushing other teeth or causing them to shift is reduced.
If there is plenty of space and it fits together properly,
it may even help with chewing function to some extent.
- When there is no decay or inflammation
If there is currently no decay in the wisdom tooth itself,
and there are no signs of inflammation in the surrounding gums,
there is no need to rush into extraction.
However, it is essential to check regularly whether this condition is maintained.
But why do most people end up having them removed?
The problem is that the three conditions above do not all align at the same time
as often as you might think.
By the time wisdom teeth are supposed to come in,
other teeth have already filled the space tightly.

Magok Dental_Cases where wisdom teeth need to be removed
Because there is not enough space, they are much more likely to grow in at an angle,
or stop halfway out of the gum.
As a result, a gap forms between the gum and the wisdom tooth,
food gets trapped, bacteria build up,
and a vicious cycle of inflammation begins.
That is why people eventually come to the conclusion, "I guess it needs to come out."
In conclusion, decisions should be based on confirmation, not intuition
"It doesn't hurt, so it should be fine."
"If it's going to be removed anyway, I might as well do it now."
Both of these are judgments made without proper criteria.
Only after checking the position and angle of the wisdom tooth,
and the distance from the surrounding bone and nerves,
with an X-ray can you decide whether it should be removed.
You cannot know the exact condition
from what is visible on the surface alone.
At Seoul Dia Dental,
after carefully examining the wisdom tooth's position, angle, and the condition of the surrounding tissues,
we provide accurate guidance on whether extraction is necessary or whether it is okay to monitor it over time.
We do not insist on removal no matter what.
But if there is a reason it needs to be removed, we will explain it clearly.

Now, shall we briefly summarize today's story?
-
Wisdom teeth do not always have to be removed
-
If they have come in straight, there is enough space, and there is no inflammation, they can be kept
-
But cases where all three conditions are met at the same time are rarer than you might think
-
Decisions should be made after X-ray confirmation, not based on intuition
