Being stuck in a situation where you can’t do this or that, I fully understand.

Today, I’ll clearly organize the treatment guidelines for wisdom teeth during pregnancy.

Can dental treatment be done during pregnancy?

Let me give you the conclusion first.

Just because you’re pregnant

does not mean that all dental treatment must be avoided.

Depending on the stage of pregnancy,

treatments that can be done and

treatments that should be postponed are divided.

Once you know those guidelines,

your vague worries will be greatly reduced.

1. Early pregnancy (months 1–3)

This is the stage when the fetus’s major organs are forming. At this time, it is best to avoid dental treatment as much as possible.

This is because anesthetics, medications, and radiation exposure

can all affect the fetus during this period.

Even if a wisdom tooth hurts, unless there is severe inflammation,

the principle is to manage it as conservatively as possible during this time.

If the pain is severe, we recommend receiving only temporary treatment within a safe range at the dental clinic.

2. Mid-pregnancy (months 4–6) / The safest period

The period when dental treatment is possible during pregnancy is this mid-pregnancy stage.

This is when the fetus’s major organ formation is completed and the risk of miscarriage is reduced.

If treatment is truly necessary, this is the safest time to receive it. However, even during mid-pregnancy, wisdom tooth extraction should be decided carefully. The stress of the extraction itself and the inflammatory response can affect the fetus.

If the inflammation is not severe,

it may be a better choice to postpone it until after delivery.

3. Late pregnancy (months 7–9)

This is the stage when the belly is very large, so simply lying back in a dental chair for a long time is burdensome.

As the uterus enlarges, when lying down

your blood pressure may drop or you may feel dizzy.

This is also a period with a risk of preterm labor, so it is best to postpone treatment except for emergency care whenever possible.

So, is wisdom tooth extraction during pregnancy completely impossible?

Not necessarily.

If the inflammation is so severe that leaving it untreated

would actually create a more dangerous situation,

extraction may be performed during mid-pregnancy.

The important thing is not to endure it unconditionally, and not to extract it unconditionally, either. It is safest to decide after consulting with your obstetrician, based on how serious the current condition is and what effect it could have on the fetus.

Do not judge it on your own. The rule is to check with both the dental clinic and obstetrics together.
