Hello.
We are Dia Dental Clinic, taking care of healthy smiles near Magok Station.
Did you find it a little surprising that a dental clinic blog is suddenly talking about “snoring”? Haha.
At first, I did too.
Isn’t snoring something for an ENT clinic
or a sleep clinic? 🤔
But here’s the thing.
Snoring and dentistry are more closely related than you might think.
In fact, many people visit the dentist because of a snoring appliance.
Starting today, let’s talk about that.
Snoring: Did you think it was just a sleeping habit?

"My husband snores so badly."
"They tell me to sleep in the next room because I snore. T.T"
You may have heard this from someone around you at least once,
or it may be something you’re experiencing yourself.
Many people think snoring is just a sleeping habit.
"It’s a little noisy, but so what?"
"Doesn’t everyone get like that as they get older?"
"It doesn’t bother me, so it’s fine."
But snoring is not just a matter of sound.
It can be an important signal your body sends while you sleep.
Why does snoring happen?
To understand the cause of snoring,
we need to know what happens in the body the moment we fall asleep.
When we fall asleep, the muscles throughout the body relax.
The muscles around the tongue and throat are no exception.
At this time, if the tongue falls backward
or the soft tissue inside the throat becomes loose,
the airway becomes narrower.
As air passes through the narrowed airway,
the surrounding tissue vibrates,
and that vibration appears as the sound of snoring.

Put simply,
the narrower the airway, the worse the snoring becomes.
And if it gets more severe, it can even lead to sleep apnea,
where breathing stops briefly during sleep.
We’ll cover this in more detail in Part 3,
so please keep that in mind.
Why snoring is a sign related to health
Let me explain in a bit more detail
why snoring is not just a sleeping habit.
- It reduces the quality of sleep
While snoring, the body is actually not resting properly.
When the airway is narrowed, the body remains in a tense state.
So even though you clearly slept, you still feel tired in the morning,
feel sleepy during the day, and have difficulty concentrating.
Does the feeling of "I slept, but it doesn’t feel like I slept" sound familiar?
- It affects cardiovascular health
When the airway narrows during sleep, the oxygen level in the blood drops.
To compensate, the body makes the heart beat faster.
If this process repeats every night,
the risk of developing high blood pressure and heart disease increases.
- It also affects the person sleeping next to you
This is a more practical point. Haha.
Because of snoring, a spouse or family member sleeping nearby
often suffers from sleep disruption.
Snoring is not only your own problem.
So what does this have to do with dentistry?
One of the key causes of snoring is
the structure of the jaw and airway.
The position of the lower jaw, the position of the tongue,
and the way the teeth fit together—all of these affect the width of the airway.
And dentistry is the place where this structure can be adjusted.
At a dental clinic, a snoring appliance is used
to slightly pull the lower jaw forward during sleep,
helping to widen the airway.

It’s not medication, and it’s not surgery.
With just an oral snoring appliance, snoring can be reduced.
I’ll explain the details step by step in the rest of the series.
Now, shall we briefly summarize today’s discussion?
- Snoring is not just a sleeping habit; it is a sign related to health
- It happens when the airway becomes narrowed
- It lowers sleep quality and affects cardiovascular health and the people around you
- Because the structure of the jaw and airway are connected, it can be addressed in dentistry
In the next post,
I’ll explain in more detail: "Why is snoring a dental issue? The relationship between the jaw and the airway."
Have a healthy day and a bright, cheerful smile. ^^
