Hello.
We are Seoul Dia Dental Clinic, helping turn concerns about your teeth into comfort
at Magok Station.
In Part 1, we discussed what veneers are
and what problems they can address.
Today, we will cover the part that many people find most confusing.
"Are veneers different from crowns?"
"Can't I just get teeth whitening?"
"I don't know which of the three I should choose."
Many people want to improve the appearance of their teeth,
but feel very confused about which method to choose.
Today, Seoul Dia Dental Clinic will clearly explain the differences
between these three treatments and the criteria for choosing among them.
First, here's the one-line summary.^^
-
Teeth whitening → A treatment that brightens the color of the teeth
-
Veneers → A treatment that bonds thin porcelain to the front surfaces of the teeth
-
Crowns → A treatment that covers the entire tooth like a cap
Although they may look similar, their purposes, methods, and suitable situations are completely different.
Teeth Whitening

Magok Veneers_Teeth Whitening
Teeth whitening is a treatment that brightens the color of the teeth themselves.
Rather than shaving or adding anything to the teeth,
whitening agents penetrate into the teeth
and break down the discolored areas.
Suitable situations
-
When the teeth are stained by coffee, tea, wine, and similar substances
-
When the shape and alignment of the teeth are fine, but the color is dark
-
When you want to brighten the teeth while disturbing them as little as possible
Limitations
-
The effect of whitening may be limited for teeth that have undergone root canal treatment
-
Deep discoloration, such as tetracycline staining, is difficult to resolve with whitening
-
Problems with tooth shape or alignment cannot be corrected
-
Staining may recur after a certain amount of time
Crown Restorations

Magok Veneers_Crown Restoration
A crown is a treatment in which the tooth is reduced on all sides
and a restoration is placed over it.
As we mentioned in our series on cavity treatment,
crowns involve the greatest amount of tooth reduction.
Suitable situations
-
When a tooth has been extensively damaged by decay or fracture
-
When a tooth needs to be protected after root canal treatment
-
When the overall shape of the tooth needs to be improved
Not recommended for cosmetic purposes alone
Placing a crown on a healthy tooth
solely for cosmetic purposes involves too much tooth reduction.
Once tooth structure is removed, it cannot be restored,
so preserving as much of a healthy tooth as possible is the right approach.
Veneers

Magok Veneers_Veneer
Veneers are made by minimally reshaping only the front surface of a tooth
and bonding a thin veneer to it.
Unlike crowns, they do not require reducing the entire tooth.
Because only the front surface is lightly prepared,
as much of the natural tooth as possible can be preserved.
Suitable situations
-
Severe discoloration that cannot be resolved with whitening
-
When you want to improve the shape, size, and alignment of the teeth together
-
When a tooth is chipped or worn
-
When you want to naturally fill spaces between the teeth (black triangles)
Situations requiring careful consideration
-
Severe alignment problems should be addressed with orthodontic treatment first
-
In cases of severe teeth grinding, the restorations may come loose
-
If you have cavities or gum problems, they should be treated first
To summarize, it is simple.
-
If only the color is a concern → Start with teeth whitening
-
If you want to improve the color, shape, and size → Veneers
-
If the tooth is extensively damaged or has undergone root canal treatment → A crown
But there is one important point.
Which of the three treatments is right for you
can only be determined after directly examining the condition of your teeth.
Even if you visit saying, "I want veneers,"
there may be cases where whitening is sufficient depending on the condition of your teeth,
or cases where another treatment should be performed first before veneers.
And one more thing.
Choosing veneers does not mean everything is finished.
How they are designed,
how naturally they harmonize with the surrounding teeth,
and whether the bite has been taken into consideration—
these differences can completely change the final result.
Simply making the teeth white and straight
is different from creating a natural smile that is uniquely yours.
Even with veneers, the results can vary.

-
Teeth whitening addresses only color; veneers address color, shape, and size; crowns cover the entire tooth
-
If only the color is a concern, start with whitening
-
Placing crowns on healthy teeth for cosmetic purposes alone involves too much tooth reduction
-
Veneers are a way to improve the appearance while preserving as much of the tooth as possible
-
The appropriate treatment should be decided after examining the condition of the teeth
In the next part, we will discuss "When Are Veneers Suitable? A Review of Indications."
