Hello.
We are Seoul Dia Dental Clinic, where we do not overlook even the smallest discomfort near Magok Station.
In Part 2, we organized the differences between professional whitening, at-home whitening, and whitening toothpaste.
Today, we are covering the question most frequently asked by people considering teeth whitening.
“Can I see whitening results too?”
“Is it true that whitening is ineffective in some cases?”
“Can a tooth that has undergone root canal treatment also be whitened?”
Teeth whitening does not produce the same results for everyone.
Depending on the condition of your teeth, there are cases where the results are clear, as well as cases that are difficult to resolve with whitening alone.
Today, Seoul Dia Dental Clinic will clearly explain the cases in which teeth whitening is effective and those in which it is not.
Cases Where Whitening Works Well

Magok teeth whitening_extrinsic staining
1. When the cause is extrinsic staining
Coffee, black tea, red wine, curry…
If the staining is caused by food and beverages, teeth whitening tends to be most effective.
As mentioned in Part 1, extrinsic staining is staining that has accumulated on the surface of the teeth, so whitening agents can break it down effectively.

Magok teeth whitening_staining caused by smoking
2. Staining caused by smoking
Staining caused by nicotine and tar can also be improved with teeth whitening.
However, if you continue smoking, the whitening effect may fade quickly.
The results can be maintained much longer if you also quit smoking after whitening.

Magok teeth whitening_aging
3. Discoloration caused by natural aging
As you get older, it is natural for your teeth to gradually become more yellow.
Teeth whitening can also work effectively in these cases.
Cases Where the Whitening Effect Is Limited
1. Tetracycline staining
If you took tetracycline antibiotics during childhood, deep staining may have developed inside the teeth.
This type of intrinsic discoloration is difficult to improve completely with standard whitening.
The teeth may become somewhat brighter, but the results may not be as significant as you hoped.
In such cases, veneers may be a more suitable option.
2. Teeth discolored after root canal treatment
Teeth that have undergone root canal treatment may turn gray or brown over time.
This is caused by changes in the internal structure of the tooth, so standard whitening has little effect.
In such cases, a method called walking bleach, which whitens the tooth from the inside, may be considered.
3. Discoloration caused by fluorosis
This occurs when excessive fluoride intake during childhood causes white or brown spots to develop on the teeth.
In this case, veneers or another treatment may be more suitable than whitening.
Cases Where Whitening Is Not Possible

Magok teeth whitening_dental restorations
1. Teeth with dental restorations
Restorations such as crowns, veneers, and resin fillings are not penetrated by whitening agents.
The color of the restoration itself cannot be changed through whitening.
After whitening, the natural teeth and restorations may appear to be different colors, so this should be checked carefully beforehand.

Magok teeth whitening_cavities
2. When cavities or gum problems are present
If whitening is performed while you have cavities or gum inflammation, the pain may become more severe or the condition may worsen.
This is why it is essential to complete cavity and gum treatment before whitening.

Magok teeth whitening_pregnancy
3. During pregnancy or breastfeeding
It is best to avoid whitening during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
Whitening agents may affect the fetus or baby.
It is safer to proceed after childbirth and once breastfeeding has ended.
Be Sure to Check Before Whitening
Before starting teeth whitening, it is important to first check the current condition of your teeth.
-
What is causing my discoloration?
-
Is it a condition that can be resolved with whitening?
-
Are there any cavities or gum problems?
If you start whitening without checking these things and proceed indiscriminately, you may not see the results you expected, or you may instead experience discomfort.
At Seoul Dia Dental Clinic, we thoroughly check the condition of your teeth before whitening and explain whether whitening is suitable or whether another treatment should come first.
