Hello.
We are Seoul Dia Dental Clinic,
responsible for healthy smiles
near Magok Station.
Starting today, we are beginning a new series.
It is about the treatment that many people fear the most:
“Root canal treatment.”
“Root canal treatment? I heard it hurts terribly. ㅜㅜ”
“Do you remove the nerve...?”
“Is it really necessary?”
Many people become frightened
just by hearing the words
“root canal treatment.”
However, once you understand root canal treatment properly,
it is a much more reasonable treatment
than you may think. ^^
Today’s first topic is:
“Why is root canal treatment necessary?”
We will explain the connection to pulpitis
step by step.
What Is Root Canal Treatment?

The official name for root canal treatment
is endodontic treatment (Root Canal Treatment).
Inside a tooth is a tissue called the pulp,
which consists of nerves and blood vessels.
Root canal treatment is performed when the pulp
becomes infected or necrotic.
The infected tissue is removed,
the inside of the tooth is thoroughly disinfected,
and the empty space is filled and sealed.
Simply put,
it is a treatment that disinfects
and preserves the infected inside of a tooth.
Many people understand it as
“removing the nerve,”
but more precisely,
it involves removing the infected nerve tissue.

Magok-dong Dental Clinic_Tooth Structure
There is one reason
root canal treatment is necessary:
The infection has progressed
into the inside of the tooth.
A healthy tooth is structured,
from the outside inward,
as enamel → dentin → pulp.
When a cavity is limited to the enamel and dentin stages,
it can be treated with a composite resin restoration or an inlay.
However, when the cavity progresses deeper
and reaches the pulp (nerve),
the situation changes.
When bacteria enter the pulp,
severe pain and inflammation develop.
If it is left untreated,
the inflammation can spread
all the way to the tip of the tooth root.
At this stage,
a composite resin restoration or inlay cannot resolve the problem.
Root canal treatment to remove the infected pulp
is the only option.

Magok-dong Dental Clinic_Pulpitis
Pulpitis refers to a condition
in which the pulp becomes inflamed.
Pulpitis is broadly divided
into two stages.
1. Reversible Pulpitis
This is the early stage of inflammation,
when the pulp can still be preserved.
At this stage,
removing only the cavity
and covering the pulp
may resolve the problem without root canal treatment.
2. Irreversible Pulpitis
This is a condition in which the inflammation has deepened
and the pulp can no longer be preserved.
From this stage onward,
root canal treatment is necessary.
The problem is that it can be difficult
to distinguish between the two stages.
In the early stage, you may only experience sensitivity to cold,
but as time passes,
the pain can become throbbing even when you are resting
and may worsen at night.
If you notice these changes,
they may be a sign that the condition
is progressing to irreversible pulpitis.
Symptoms That May Require Root Canal Treatment
If even one of the following applies,
you may be in a condition that requires root canal treatment.
-
The tooth throbs even when you are not doing anything
-
Pain from hot foods or drinks lasts for more than 30 seconds
-
Pain lingers after the tooth comes into contact with something cold
-
You feel pain when chewing
-
The gums are swollen or pus is visible
-
The tooth has become darker in color
-
A tooth that previously received cavity treatment has started hurting again
These symptoms may be signs
that the pulp has already become infected
or has begun to become necrotic.
What Happens If Root Canal Treatment Is Delayed?
If treatment is delayed
when root canal treatment is necessary,
the following may occur.
<Stage 1>
The inflammation spreads to the tip of the tooth root,
causing a periapical abscess.
<Stage 2>
The gums swell and fill with pus,
causing severe pain.
<Stage 3>
The inflammation spreads to the surrounding bone,
and the bone supporting the tooth may begin to deteriorate.
<Stage 4>
The tooth may reach a point where it can no longer be saved,
possibly requiring extraction followed by an implant.
If the timing for root canal treatment is missed,
the consequences may not end with losing one tooth.
The surrounding teeth and bone may also be affected.
Root Canal Treatment Is a Treatment That Saves the Tooth

Magok-dong Dental Clinic_Root Canal Treatment That Saves the Tooth
One reason many people fear root canal treatment
is the misconception:
“Won’t I eventually have to have the tooth extracted anyway?”
However, root canal treatment
is intended to preserve
the natural tooth as much as possible.
After root canal treatment, placing a crown
can restore the tooth’s function
and help maintain the natural tooth for a long time.
No matter how much implants develop,
they cannot be as perfect as natural teeth.
Root canal treatment
is the final option for protecting
that natural tooth.
At 서울디아치과,
the success of root canal treatment depends on
how precisely the infected area is removed
and how completely the tooth is sealed.
At 서울디아치과,
we conduct a precise examination
to accurately determine whether root canal treatment is necessary
before proceeding with treatment.
We do not recommend unnecessary root canal treatment.
However, when it is necessary,
we explain it accurately.
We are happy to provide convenient consultations
through Naver TalkTalk or reservations.
Please feel free to check your condition without 부담.
