Hello.
A dental clinic near City Hall Station and Gwanghwamun
Located directly across from the Samsung Main Building at Exit 7 of City Hall Station,
we are 연세예감치과.
Since the once-a-year national health insurance scaling benefit applies once between January 1 and December 31,
patients usually tend to crowd dental clinics toward the end of the year.
As a result, if you visit the dentist for scaling at the end of the year,
waiting times can easily become longer.
Rather than putting off scaling until the end of the year,
with the Lunar New Year approaching, it may not be a bad idea to get your teeth cleaned at the beginning of the year,
like starting fresh after a thorough bath!
Scaling = tartar removal.
The scaling that people usually receive when they visit a dental clinic and ask to have scaling done
is supragingival scaling (removing visible tartar above the gumline).
There can also be tartar beneath the gums.
These areas are usually treated with root planing, periodontal treatment, or similar procedures.
The Sound of Dental Scaling
For anyone who may be curious about the sound of scaling,
our dental hygienists at 연세예감치과 took turns performing scaling so you can hear what it sounds like. ↓
The sound occurs because an ultrasonic scaler is used.
At a previous dental clinic where some of us worked, there were dental hygienists who said they would never receive scaling at their own clinic because it was dirty.
At our clinic, however, our staff members personally receive scaling at 연세예감치과,
as we maintain thorough hygiene standards, and our entire staff, led by a dentist who is a specialist, consists of dental hygienists.

Does it hurt a lot?
An ultrasonic scaler is generally used during scaling.
The more swollen the gums are, the more prickly or uncomfortable the procedure may feel.
Bleeding is also more common when the gums are swollen.

Before and after scaling

Less swollen gums bleed less ▲
Gums with a lot of tartar and swelling bleed more. ▼

In addition, if your gums are unhealthy and your tooth roots are significantly exposed,
scaling may cause temporary sensitivity as the tartar is removed.
[This is similar to feeling cold after taking off the layers of clothing you were wearing during the cold winter.]
However, leaving tartar on the roots of your teeth will further worsen your gum health,
so you should make sure to receive scaling.
Is gargle anesthesia available?
This is a question patients occasionally ask.
Yes! It is available at our 연세예감치과 near City Hall Station.
Some people actually find scaling so refreshing and pleasant that they even ask us to apply stronger pressure.
However, some patients prefer to have scaling without gargle anesthesia.
Because we provide gargle anesthesia only when requested, please let us know before scaling if you would like to receive it.
Cost of scaling
Is scaling covered by national health insurance free of charge?
-> This is a question sometimes asked by older patients. It is not free, and providing it free of charge would be illegal.
Apparently, some dental clinics used to provide free scaling illegally, but we do not believe such clinics exist these days.
Waiving the patient's national health insurance copayment is illegal.
Since scaling is covered by national health insurance, a treatment fee is charged according to the rates set by the government, just as when you visit an otolaryngology clinic for a cold and are charged according to the rates set by national health insurance.
The price also differs depending on whether you have not visited the dentist for a long time or whether the scaling is performed during an ongoing course of treatment.
It can also vary slightly depending on the time of your visit (an additional charge applies after 6 p.m.), and an additional charge applies on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays.
(Still, because it is covered by national health insurance, the difference is not substantial.)
In addition, regardless of our wishes,
national health insurance treatment fees increase slightly each year as prices rise,
so the fee may differ from last year.
Even so, the cost is generally in the high teens to the 20,000-won range and does not exceed 30,000 won at most.
Is scaling available only once a year?
Korean citizens aged 19 or older who have national health insurance
are eligible for scaling once a year.
The applicable period is once between January 1 and December 31 of the relevant year.
However, in addition to this once-a-year scaling benefit, there are other types of scaling covered by national health insurance.
The government established the once-a-year scaling benefit to encourage people to receive scaling at least once a year for their health.
For people with severely unhealthy gums,
even those under 19 may be eligible for periodontal scaling covered by national health insurance every six months
if a dentist at the dental clinic diagnoses them as needing scaling due to poor gum health.
Therefore, if your gums bleed when you brush your teeth, swell easily, or otherwise seem unhealthy,
be sure to receive a dentist's diagnosis and have scaling more frequently than once a year when appropriate.
Because a dental clinic is also a medical institution,
all dental treatment must be performed after receiving a diagnosis from a dentist!
