Today, for patients who have been told they need a crown, for those wondering how many days after tooth preparation a crown is placed, we will explain the time it takes to complete a crown based on our clinic’s standards.

For tooth-colored white zirconia crowns, our City Hall Station Yonsei Yegam Dental Clinic is currently not using rubber impression material. Instead, we are using an intraoral scan.

Therefore, if the tooth is prepared and an intraoral scan is taken, the crown can be placed as early as the 3rd day after the scan. As a result, foreign tourists or overseas Koreans visiting Korea for a short stay can still have a crown done at our clinic even if they only stay in Korea for about 4–5 days for sightseeing.

This varies depending on the case and material, so for white (ceramic E.max) inlays and gold inlays, we proceed with impressions because, due to their characteristics, taking an impression is better.

This is a video of an intraoral scan taken at our clinic back in 2018. (The video was recorded with the patient’s consent.) At the time, we used intraoral scans only for guided implant placement. Back then, we thought it was better to have a dental model made from an impression and fabricate the crown to fit that model, so we sometimes took impressions.

However, in recent years, technology has improved a lot, and many dental clinics now use intraoral scanners for crowns as well— even buying expensive intraoral scanners (they reportedly cost several million won, wow). Of course, if a clinic does not have an intraoral scanner, they will not use one and will take an impression instead.

The advantage of intraoral scanning is that with the rubber impression method,

you take the rubber impression in the mouth -> pour plaster into it -> make the crown based on that, so there used to be errors occurring between each step. With intraoral scanning, however, the scan is taken directly inside the patient’s mouth, which shortens the process and greatly reduces errors between steps. Also, with the rubber impression method, you have to wait until the rubber sets in the mouth, and some patients may feel like gagging because of the heavy material in their mouth. Intraoral scanning reduces that concern.

Because our clinic treats many foreign patients coming from overseas, there are many cases where we need to make the crown in time for the patient’s departure.

In the case of an intraoral scanner, there is no need to spend time shipping the impression to the lab, because it is handled through digital transfer, which saves time and allows us to make crowns faster than clinics without an intraoral scanner.

Some clinics make crowns on the same day, but there is only one patient at a time, after all. Even if you try to do it on the same day, it still takes a long time.

Advantages of intraoral scanning

• Fast fabrication: No need to collect impressions or pour plaster. The intraoral scan is transmitted digitally and linked with the CAD/CAM system to produce the restoration immediately.
• Reduced errors: Because there is no process of hardening rubber in the mouth or pouring plaster to make a model, errors at each step are reduced.
• Less discomfort during impressions: There is no gag reflex discomfort from keeping rubber in the mouth during intraoral scanning.
• Easy to modify: Even if adjustments are needed, there is no need to take a full new impression; you can delete only the necessary part from the previously taken intraoral scan and rescan only that section.
