Radiesse: Firm Contours and Skin Texture at the Same Time

For people with these needs, the treatment that best fits is 'Radiesse.' It is a biostimulating booster that aims for volume, lifting, and improved skin texture all at once.

Based on the questions we hear most often from our clients at MUTOEL, we would like to explain everything in detail, from the principle and suitable areas to duration and safety points.

What is Radiesse?

It is an injectable formulation in which calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microparticles are dispersed in a gel.

When these biocompatible particles, which are similar to the components of bone and teeth, are injected into the skin, the gel initially creates immediate volume, and over time it stimulates collagen fibers to grow newly around the particles.

That is why, with a single treatment, it can fill in current volume while also improving firmness over the following months, which is considered one of Radiesse's biggest advantages.

What are its strengths?

It has relatively high viscoelasticity, and thanks to its strong supportive properties, it can help shape areas that need structural support, such as the cheeks, jawline, and the lower area below the cheekbones.

Rather than simply creating a swollen feeling, it supports volume like building a pillar, which is beneficial for making facial contours appear more defined.

In addition, as collagen remodeling is added, you may experience a denser skin texture and improvements in pores and fine lines.

Which areas is it used for?

The most representative areas are the cheeks and around the nasolabial folds, the chin and jawline, the area below the cheekbones, and the temples.

For faces where the midface looks sunken and shadowed, faces where the nasolabial folds look deeper when smiling, or people whose chin appears short and flat from the side, more dramatic effects may be seen.

Even when the fine wrinkles and tendon lines on the back of the hands become prominent and make the hands look older, you can expect smoother volume and improved skin texture at the same time.

By adjusting the concentration and dilution ratio, this treatment is also applied to texture remodeling in thin, less elastic areas such as the neck and collarbone line, as well as the skin above the knees.

Differences from hyaluronic acid fillers

If hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers are a 'filling' concept that draws in water to create moist volume, Radiesse is closer to a 'building' volume through structural support and collagen production.

So even with the same amount, contour refinement often appears more clearly.

However, while HA can be dissolved with hyaluronidase if needed, CaHA currently does not have a dedicated dissolving agent.

For this reason, the skilled hands and delicate technique of an experienced board-certified plastic surgeon, who can design safe anatomical layers, become even more important.

Also, when customized injection is performed by adjusting the dilution ratio, CaHA particles are broken down into calcium and phosphate ions and absorbed by the body.

How is the procedure done?

During the consultation, the face, curves, and shadows are first analyzed in 3D, and then the plan is divided into the points and areas that need structural support.

After cream anesthesia or local anesthesia, the appropriate amount is distributed and injected into the proper layer using a needle or cannula.

For contour refinement, it is usually organized above the periosteum or in the deep fat layer, while for texture improvement, it is distributed more broadly in the superficial fat layer to the layer above it.

The procedure takes about 10 to 15 minutes, and while return to daily life is relatively quick, individuals may experience bruising or swelling for up to about 10 days.

The contour and volume are visible immediately after injection, and from around 4 weeks onward, collagen remodeling begins in earnest, so many people notice finer changes in skin texture.

The duration varies depending on the area, amount, and lifestyle habits, but in practice we usually explain it as 12 to 18 months. When performed for the purpose of improving skin texture, the goal is often about 1 year of improved skin quality after 2 to 3 sessions.

What about side effects and aftercare?

As with all injectable procedures, bruising, swelling, and temporary discomfort may occur.

In rare cases, nodules or overcorrection can occur, and serious complications such as intravascular injection can happen with any injectable procedure, so we recommend undergoing treatment by a board-certified plastic surgeon who has anatomical knowledge and experience with various cases.

Also, as mentioned above, unlike hyaluronic acid, there is no separate dissolving medication, so from the start you should avoid overfilling with too much volume, and in areas with many risk vessels, the depth and direction must be strictly limited for safe treatment.

In addition, during pregnancy and breastfeeding, timing adjustments or avoidance may be necessary, so it is helpful to explain your personal medical history in detail during the consultation.

On the day of the procedure, it is best to avoid strenuous exercise, saunas, alcohol, and similar activities, and you should maintain cleanliness to reduce the risk of infection.

If bruising occurs, cold compresses can help, and after 24 hours, light warm compresses may also help speed absorption.

Sometimes you may feel a lumpy texture. In most cases, this is not inflammation but a fluid or swelling response, and it stabilizes within a few weeks.

Please avoid strong massage or pressure on your own, and if the foreign-body sensation continues, be sure to visit the clinic for an evaluation.

Who is it effective for?

Radiesse is especially helpful when deep wrinkle improvement is needed, or for people who need correction for sunken cheeks or the jaw line, or when you want longer-lasting results than a regular filler, or when you want improved firmness and volume across the entire skin layer.

However, for very expressive, shallow areas such as the lips or under the eyes, a more conservative approach is preferred.

For this reason, while it is reassuring as a standalone treatment, if it is combined with Botox, energy lifting, or thread lifting, it is also one of the treatments that works very well in synergy with other procedures.

Radiesse can be a smart solution that brings together immediate visible volume and the firmness created over time.
