Is Plastic Surgery in Summer Really Okay?
A Complete Guide to Inflammation, Recovery, and Precautions
Hello.
I am Dr. Junho Choi,
Director of Mutoel Plastic Surgery.
As the hot summer approaches,
it is time to start preparing for vacations.
With the vacation season approaching, more people are visiting our clinic
to improve appearance-related concerns they had been putting off.
On the other hand, many people hesitate to undergo plastic surgery in summer
because of the hot sunlight and humid weather.
“Won’t surgery in summer cause wounds to worsen
or inflammation to develop more easily?”
Many people are very concerned about this.
So today, through Mutoel TV,
I would like to take the time to explain in detail
the misconceptions and facts about plastic surgery in summer,
as well as the proper ways to manage recovery.

Is inflammation really more likely to occur after summer plastic surgery?
To give you the clear conclusion first,
I can confidently say that the season of surgery
has no connection whatsoever with the occurrence of inflammation.
In the past, air conditioning and other cooling facilities
were not widely available, and operating rooms
and antibiotics were not as advanced as they are today,
making wound care more challenging in summer.
However, modern medical technology has
advanced dramatically compared with the past.
Today, operating rooms are fully equipped with
sterile management systems that thoroughly prevent infection,
as well as air-conditioning systems that maintain
comfortable temperature and humidity levels 24 hours a day.
In addition, effective antibiotics and
pain medication are prescribed, so the risk of
inflammation or complications does not increase simply because it is summer.
Rather, if you spend most of your postoperative recovery
in a cool indoor environment,
seasonal factors are not a concern at all.
In other words, there is no need to postpone
surgery simply because the weather is hot.

How should you manage sweating and washing your face?
If you undergo surgery in summer,
one of the issues requiring the most attention
is managing sweat and washing your face.
If sweat or water gets into the surgical site,
there may be a greater risk of the wound worsening,
so special care is necessary.
Until all stitches have been removed,
you must take thorough care to prevent water
from coming into direct contact with the surgical site.
When washing your face, it is best to use
a wet towel or cleansing water carefully
to gently wipe the areas other than the surgical site.
When washing your hair, we recommend tilting
your head backward and washing carefully
so that water does not splash onto the surgical site.
If you have sweated heavily after going outside,
use a clean towel or sterile gauze
to gently pat and wipe around the wound.
After the stitches have been removed, light washing
with water is possible, but this is still a very
sensitive period while the wound is healing,
so it is important to continue taking care
until you have fully recovered.

Managing Swelling in Summer: How to Use Warm and Cold Compresses
After summer plastic surgery,
the final surgical result may vary depending on
how effectively swelling at the surgical site is managed.
For approximately three days immediately after surgery,
you must apply cool cold compresses
to help prevent bleeding and swelling.
Especially during the early postoperative period,
swelling and a sensation of heat in the tissue
may be significant, so consistent cold compresses
can have a major effect on the speed of recovery.
After that, beginning on the fourth day,
when the major swelling starts to subside,
warm compresses are recommended.
Warm compresses promote smooth blood circulation
in the surgical area and help bruising and residual swelling
that have collected beneath the skin tissue to subside more quickly.
However, in summer, warm compresses may feel somewhat uncomfortable
because of the hot weather.
In such cases, adjust the pack to a lukewarm temperature
so that it is not too hot, or apply warm compresses
in a comfortable indoor environment with the air conditioning on.
When applying a compress, wrap the pack
in a thin, clean towel to help prevent skin damage.

Why Is Sun Protection Important After Surgery?
Another key point during the postoperative recovery process
is thorough protection from ultraviolet rays.
The intense ultraviolet rays of summer
are a major cause of pigmentation at the surgical site.
During the sensitive process of healing at the surgical incision,
if the wound is exposed to ultraviolet rays without protection
for a prolonged period,
the surgical area may become darkly pigmented,
or the scar may appear more prominent.
Therefore, when going outside during the day,
it is advisable to actively use wide-brimmed hats
or parasols to avoid direct sunlight
coming into contact with the skin as much as possible.
Wearing lightly tinted sunglasses can also block ultraviolet rays
and help reduce pigmentation of the scar.
However, immediately after surgery, the skin barrier is sensitive,
so applying sunscreen directly to the wound
should be avoided because of the risk of infection.
After approximately two to three weeks have passed
and you have confirmed that the wound has healed,
safely applying a thin layer of sunscreen
is the recommended approach.

In Closing..
If you carefully learn and follow
postoperative care instructions,
you can fully enjoy the advantages
of having plastic surgery in summer.
You can use a vacation or an extended school break
to get plenty of rest and focus on recovery,
and it is also easier to go outside
while concealing bruising and swelling
with sunglasses, hats, and other accessories.
