A short nose can occur when the nasal bones or cartilage are small, making the face appear flatter by reducing its three-dimensional definition.

It is also important to determine the characteristics of the nose—whether it is an upturned nose with a significant amount of nostril exposure from the front, whether the alar cartilage at the tip is positioned upward, or whether the nose is simply short—so that the appropriate procedure can be performed for clear improvement and a highly satisfactory result.

The Short Nose Common Among East Asians

As mentioned above, a short nose refers to a nose whose length is shorter than one-third of the entire face and is tilted upward, resulting in significant nostril exposure from the front—commonly known as an upturned nose.

It also includes noses that have become shortened due to capsular contracture, one of the possible complications of rhinoplasty.

This type of nose requires improvement not only in height but also in length. If an implant is used without correcting the underlying issue, the nose may become even shorter and appear more upturned, making this one of the more technically demanding types of rhinoplasty.

When the alar cartilage at the tip is directed upward, the tip may appear upturned and the nose may look shorter. This can be improved through cartilage reshaping. By removing part of the upper portion of the alar cartilage and repositioning and securing it lower down, the height of the tip can be reduced while the length can be increased!

Surgical Methods by Short-Nose Type

When the alar cartilage that forms the tip of the nose is positioned upward, part of the upper portion of the alar cartilage is removed through cartilage reshaping, and its position is lowered to correct it.

When correction is difficult with the cartilage reshaping method described above, part of the alar cartilage is removed and a septal cartilage graft is placed between the structures to lengthen the tip of the nose.

After correcting the length of the short nose using the two surgical methods described above, the length and height of the bridge and tip can be corrected using an implant and autologous cartilage.
