A Short Nose Common Among East Asians

As mentioned earlier, a short nose refers to a nose whose length is shorter than one-third of the entire face and is upturned, resulting in significant nostril exposure when viewed from the front—commonly known as an upturned nose.

This also includes noses that have become shortened due to capsular contracture, one of the possible complications of rhinoplasty.

For this type of nose, both the height and length must be improved. If only an implant is used without correcting the underlying issue, the nose may become even shorter and appear more upturned, making this one of the more technically demanding types of nose surgery.

When the alar cartilage at the tip of the nose is angled upward, the tip may appear upturned and the nose may look shorter. This can be improved through cartilage reshaping. After removing part of the upper portion of the alar cartilage and repositioning and securing it lower down, the height of the tip can be lowered and its length can be increased!

Surgical Methods by Short Nose Type

When the alar cartilage that forms the tip of the nose is raised upward, the correction involves removing part of the upper portion of the alar cartilage through cartilage reshaping and lowering its position.

When correction is difficult with the cartilage reshaping described above, part of the alar cartilage is removed and septal cartilage is grafted between the structures to lengthen the tip of the nose.

After correcting the length of the short nose using the two surgical methods described above, the length and height of the bridge and tip can be adjusted using an implant and autologous cartilage.
