<Actual eye surgery case from DM Plastic Surgery>
Hello, this is DM Plastic Surgery🥰
There is one frequent question that many people who visit our clinic
ask us while expressing serious concern!
"Doctor, I heard that after surgery, the eyes might not close all the way. Is that really okay?"
Many people worry that their eyes may close less fully, or not close at all,
after double eyelid surgery🥺
Today, together with Director Lee Ju-hong, we’ll look at the causes of lagophthalmos that can occur after eye surgery,
and how it can be addressed😊
Q. Why do eyes not close properly after eye surgery?

Among those considering double eyelid surgery,
many worry about the phenomenon where the eyes do not close after surgery,
the so-called lagophthalmos.
So today, we’ll take some time to look at what kinds of cases can cause lagophthalmos,
and what solutions are available if it occurs.

The phenomenon of not being able to close the eyes after eye surgery can be caused by several factors.
There are three representative examples.
First, it can occur when excessive skin tissue or
excessive muscle tissue is removed during eye surgery.

The second case is when ptosis correction has been performed too aggressively.

The third is when it occurs temporarily due to scar tissue within the surgical area after surgery.
This eye-not-closing phenomenon can occur for various reasons,
but these three are the main ones to remember.

The structures that are more likely to develop lagophthalmos vary depending on each person’s eye skin condition,
elasticity, and anatomy, but in most cases it is more likely to occur when the eyes are protruding,
or when ptosis is severe.
Q. Can it be solved with revision eye surgery?

Most cases of incomplete eye closure can be resolved with revision eye surgery.
In cases where it is a temporary phenomenon caused by scar tissue,
it may also improve on its own over time without revision surgery.

Let me explain cases where revision surgery can help.
For those who have a pulling sensation in the skin, it may be possible to gather the excess skin tissue
or gather other tissues such as muscle tissue on the inside
and use that to help the skin cover more smoothly.
If ptosis has been overcorrected, the pulling effect of the muscle
can be slightly released so that the eyes can close properly.

However, there is one part that cannot be improved 100%.
That is when too much skin tissue was removed in the first place.
Even if other tissues are gathered,
there are cases where it may not be possible to return to the original state.
To prevent this kind of incomplete eye closure,
it is important to carefully measure the eye and bone structure before surgery,
as well as the changes in eye structure after surgery.
It is best not to set overly ambitious goals,
and because it may be difficult for patients to measure their own eye structure,
we strongly recommend visiting the clinic and consulting with an experienced specialist.

Today, together with Director Lee Ju-hong of DM Plastic Surgery,
we looked at the phenomenon of eyes not closing properly after double eyelid surgery.
This type of lagophthalmos may be temporary,
but if it is due to structural problems such as excessive tissue removal, improvement is definitely necessary.
Carefully understanding the structure of your eyes before surgery and setting a safe target may feel a little bothersome,
but as it is an important process for creating beautiful, comfortable eyes that will last a lifetime, please be sure to follow it❗😊
