Epicanthoplasty - How Much Mongolian Fold Removal Is Effective?

One of the commonly performed surgeries in eye plastic surgery, besides double eyelid surgery, is #epicanthoplasty. As with any cosmetic surgery, epicanthoplasty can produce a significant positive effect when it is done appropriately for the right cases.

When epicanthoplasty is done indiscriminately, problems can occur, such as the eyes looking too close together, a noticeable indented scar near the inner corner of the eye, or excessive exposure of the red tissue of the lacrimal caruncle. If epicanthoplasty is performed forcefully on eyes that should not have it, or if the design is too aggressive in order to make the eyes look larger, the eyes may end up looking problematic.

In general, for East Asians, the inner-eye fold called the epicanthal fold blocks the inner corner of the eye from the upper eyelid, making the eyes look smaller when there is no double eyelid. Even in eyes with double eyelids, if the epicanthal fold covers the inner corner, only the back part of the double eyelid line is visible.

If the distance between the eyes looks wide, that is also an indication for epicanthal fold removal, or epicanthoplasty. Sometimes epicanthoplasty is performed by itself without double eyelid surgery, but in most cases it is more effective when done together with double eyelid surgery.

As mentioned above, epicanthoplasty is a surgery that removes the epicanthal fold to open up the inner corner of the eyes. In other words, it also aims to open the front so that some of the red tissue at the inner corner of the eye becomes visible.

Recently, many people have come to dislike visible exposure of the red tissue at the lacrimal caruncle and want only the hook-like part of the epicanthal fold removed without further opening. With this type of epicanthoplasty, exposure of the red tissue is minimized, so the result is natural, and the sharp impression caused by the hook-like fold at the inner corner can be softened by removing the epicanthal hook.
