Wonju Miro Arts Central Market

It was August in the year 2019.

My grandmother said she wanted to see her great-grandmother, saying it had been a million years since she had seen her, and while clutching the phone,

she said that all the other grandchildren and great-grandchildren of the senior center come and go like that...

But she also said, as for me (the grandmother), she was truly fine and that as long as everyone was doing well, that was enough.

She always prays for work and health.

Yes, yes... Grandma, I’ll come... wait for me...

My maternal grandmother is over 95 years old.

So we usually go down there whenever we have a weekend off, trying to visit her even one day more, and in fact we had been to Wonju two weeks before she called^^

But because she is getting older, it feels like her sense of time is gradually becoming less certain.

So without a word, we took the train and went straight to see our great-grandmother.

We came to Wonju~

I like department stores, but I really, really love traditional markets too, so this is a place I always stop by.

Places with lots to see and eat truly feel like heaven to me.

ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

My heart is pounding, thumping.

Since we were here, we came to look around and buy some tasty side dishes to take home!!!!

This Central Market Miro Village is not only huge, but it also has Buildings A, B, C, and D, so it’s very complicated.

Regardless of A, B, C, or D,

all four buildings are connected, so first you should find the entrance stairs.

We went in through Building D!

There are friendly map guides placed all over the place like this,

but they seem almost useless...

Even if you look at them and go around, there are so many shops that while browsing you end up not knowing where anything is,

and it’s easy to forget...ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

Alright, then let’s calm down and carefully go up to the upper floor.

For reference, I had only ever been to the Free Market, where there are fruits, rice cakes,

and a normal traditional market,

so this was my first time at a Miro Market.

If you get lost, you’ll be a total fool, so stay sharp.

They really made excellent use of the building.

Vintage & retro vibes.

These days, local governments are doing a lot of this through policy support projects.

Like Incheon Sinpo Market Youth Mall and Yeosu Youth Mall featured on Baek Jong-won’s Alley Restaurant,

this is one of those places.

Wonju Miro Arts Market is also

similar to a youth mall as part of revitalizing traditional markets,

and after Baek Jong-won’s Alley Restaurant aired,

it became even more widely known~

But the Miro Market also has an artistic feel to it.

Since it’s a youth mall, it wasn’t just a place selling food,

but there were many cute little shops where you could experience workshops and more!!!!

I’m someone who finds everything fascinating.

I kept exclaiming in admiration that they really did a great job.

There were quite a few stores, so I can’t show them all in photos,

but as you can see,

there were lots of bead crafts,

and what interested me most was the doll workshop.

They make a framework first and then layer hanji one sheet at a time, so

because of time, I had to passㅠㅠ

It brought back memories of the barber shop from when I was little!!!!!

There’s a variety of things packed into a small space, with nothing missing.

Seeing all of this gathered in one place

is such a strangely fascinating sight...

 

  

The doll workshop I mentioned!!!!!

You can make a doll, but you can also buy one.

But the price...

Since they’re handmade, of course the cost has to be high, right?

As we were looking around, before we knew it, we were hungry...

There were so many foods that I kept wondering what to eat.

I was debating whether to go to the place from Alley Restaurant, but

since it was summer at the time... I was craving something cool.

Mother, this is the place—come in quickly.

This was also a place famous as a good restaurant, so I had looked it up in advance.

Pwahaha, I’m going to eat a lot.

I’m hungry

Boss,

please give us Chungmu gimbap, small gimbap,

and kimchi rolled noodles,

quickly, as one serving that feels like two servings (whisper whisper).

 

Can you see it? That radiant appearance.

It’s so satisfyingly full inside.

To be honest, Chungmu gimbap is just plain rice wrapped in seaweed,

and it feels like something you eat with seasoned side dishes, so I don’t particularly love it,

but today I’m hungry, so I’ll just eat it all.

I was practically ready to chew stones.

The kimchi rolled noodles were also really delicious, with a cool, spicy broth.

My mom said how am I going to finish all this...

See... I told you I was hungry, didn’t I?

If I hadn’t ordered even one thing, I would have been disappointed.

Now that I’m full, I’ll head out againㅋㅋㅋ

We finally reached the noodle soup shop I saw on the broadcast~

There was no waiting line, so I thought, huh? That’s unusual.

But...^^ just as expected, it was closed because they sold out of ingredients.

I’m glad we filled up at Maeng’s Place first...

because the owner is older and suddenly many customers came in,

it became very difficult for her, so the menu would need to be limited,

and this is a request for understanding^^

 

The business hours are like this,

but in reality, it may sell out quickly, so you might not be able to eat it... sniffle.

I really want to try the noodle soup and red bean porridgeㅠㅠ

This is another restaurant that appeared on the broadcast.

Seeing young owners go through trial and error while running it,

I thought they were amazing, and seeing how crowded it was, it seems to be doing really well^^

Burrito Meet, with tacos and burritos,

and Miro Market’s Dream, with steak and flying-fish-roe butter rice.

And the place I truly, truly highly recommend

I never miss it whenever I go to Wonju... there isn’t even a sign.

They just run the business under a simple tent... the taste is something else.

 

Every time I go, 8 is the minimum,

and I always buy 10,000 won worth to eat on the way back to Seoul.

 

It seems they make it with corn starch or something like that.

The color was yellow!!! It’s even tastier because they fry them right away.

Ahㅠㅠ I can’t explain this in words.

It’s really chewy and sweet, and even when it gets cold, it’s seriously so good.

Because I waited in line to buy the twisted doughnuts and came back to the market, before I knew it, it was getting dark...

I still had to buy side dishes, but at this point I was pressed for timeㅠㅠ

Seeing this makes me hungry again... I think we bought about five kinds at this point.

Among the side dish shops we visited, this one seemed to be the biggest,

so we picked this place.

 

The kind owner gave us seasoned squid as a bonus?

As expected, home-cooked rice is the best.

The meat was also beef brought from Hoengseong, Gangwon Province,

so I wrapped it in lettuce with a heaping bowl of rice and finished it in one shot.
