As surgery to remove double eyelids becomes increasingly popular these days,

sometimes

we get asked, “If a double eyelid appears on only one side, is it possible to remove it on just that side?”

“Yes, of course, it is possible to remove it on just one side.”

That is right. If a double eyelid exists on only one side, it makes sense to remove it on that side only, and if it exists on both sides, both sides should be removed.

However, there is something we tend to overlook.

Double eyelid removal surgery cleanly removes the double eyelid at the surgical site, but if only one side is operated on, a double eyelid may appear in the opposite eye.

As you can see, compared to before surgery, the overlapping crease in the left eye (the right side in the photo) looks noticeably deeper even to the naked eye after surgery.

There are several complex reasons why this happens, and the biggest among them is swelling.

Swelling is a type of inflammatory reaction that occurs around a wound. When inflammation occurs, the tissues can adhere to each other, which can lead to a double eyelid forming.

(It does not mean that only the operated eye swells just because only one eye was operated on!)

Another reason is that as the eye on the side where the double eyelid was removed opens more easily, the muscles in the opposite eye also exert more force, causing more wrinkles to appear temporarily. If this phenomenon continues, it is highly likely to settle in as another crease.

Through double eyelid removal surgery, the double eyelid on one eye is removed, and even when looking downward or closing the eyes, you can see that the double eyelid has been removed naturally and without being noticeable.

However, as mentioned above, because the phenomenon of a double eyelid appearing on the opposite side cannot be completely ignored, it is better to receive a consultation before surgery so that you can know in advance about these postoperative changes and be prepared to handle them.
