Today, I’d like to talk about the progress after lateral canthoplasty.

Lateral canthoplasty is, as the name suggests, a procedure that opens the outer corner of the eye to increase the eye’s overall size.

Our clinic’s lateral canthoplasty does not simply open the eye outward; it also lowers the outer corner while opening it backward,

so the degree of opening is large and noticeable.

Because of these characteristics, there are certain postoperative changes that follow.

First is blurred vision in the early stage after surgery.

Along with the effects of anesthesia, the incision line at the outer corner of the eye touches the eyeball, and after applying ointment,

vision can be blurry for a while, and objects may appear doubled or even tripled. Unlike surgery on other areas, this is a common early postoperative phenomenon for eye surgery,

and it gradually improves over time.

Second is conjunctival swelling that occurs after surgery.

Conjunctival swelling may be easier to understand if you think of it as swelling of the skin occurring on the eye’s conjunctiva.

( Eye redness = skin bruising / Conjunctival swelling = skin swelling ) Because surgery is performed on the area connected to the conjunctiva, the conjunctiva becomes irritated and swells,

and the swelling gradually subsides over time. Conjunctival swelling is a common phenomenon that occurs in more than 90% of patients undergoing lateral canthoplasty, but while the conjunctiva is swollen, symptoms such as the lower eyelashes poking the eye, glare, stinging eyes, and dry eyes may occur together, so ophthalmic medication is used as well.

Third is the incision scar from the opening procedure.

Compared with other clinics, our eye-corner lowering lateral canthoplasty has a much more dramatic degree of opening, so the incision area is wider and the period during which sutures remain in place is longer, matching that effect. As a result, the period during which you must tolerate discomfort when washing your face is also longer, and because the incision area is wider, the scar is not small either. Usually, as time passes, the wound heals and the scar fades, but because scarring varies greatly from person to person, there is an aspect that requires accepting some degree of scarring.

In addition, during recovery, the outer corner of the eye may heal into a pointed shape like this,

but no matter how precisely the outer corner is shaped, the healing pattern may still become round, following the shape of the eyeball,

because of the structure of the eye and eye movement. This is a difference that appears depending on the patient rather than a difference in the surgical method,

so the outer corner shape may not always turn out exactly as desired.

Before undergoing surgery, it is essential to consider in advance the various changes that may occur afterward,

and it is best to proceed only when you can accept the points above.
