Many people who undergo canthoplasty come to the clinic hoping to make their eyes much bigger.
So during consultations, they say, "Please open them as much as possible so my eyes look much bigger," but
when we explain the scarring that can occur the more it is opened, or the degree of recovery,
they hesitate and start to worry.
Then they say, "As much as possible, but without going that far!"
.... ㅠㅠ
When it is put this way, as the surgeon, it creates a sense of pressure not to let that happen,
so the surgery can only be done defensively,
and in many cases patients do not get the effect they wanted..

Of course, I understand.
In our clinic’s canthoplasty, during the recovery period, conjunctival swelling or redness can become severe,
and even in the process of healing, the wound may look concerning enough to worry people.
Swelling is swelling, and redness is redness, but the part that is most concerning is the incision site.
After the stitches are removed at two weeks after surgery, this visible wound can easily make patients feel as though it has not healed properly and the stitches were removed too soon.
Since the stitches have been removed, they need to wash their face and continue daily life,
but if the wound still looks torn like this, it can be worrying.

Redness and swelling are a little easier to accept because we know they improve over time,
but the concern is whether a wound at this level will truly heal well.
And whether it might heal while remaining in this condition, leaving the outer corner of the eye looking torn in this shape.
That kind of worry is only natural.
I have seen countless canthoplasty patients,
but whether it was swelling, wound healing, the degree of opening, or how much the outer corner of the eye had been lowered, there has never been a patient whose condition remained exactly the same as it was at two weeks after surgery.
The wound that looked severe in the two-week photo
healed well and remained closed rather than gaping, as seen in the final photo,
and the outer corner that had dropped a bit too much also rose appropriately and settled into a natural position.

As the eyes that were red and irritated improved, and the wound that seemed as though it would never heal actually healed,
we were able to see through the two-week and two-year photos that recovery happens naturally over time.
As the outer corner rises during recovery, or the opened area closes as it heals, that does not mean the surgery had no effect.
It means the effect is there, but there are things that must be endured during the recovery period to achieve that level of result.
The more it is opened, the longer the recovery period becomes,
and the likelihood of entropion or scarring also increases,
so rather than saying, "Please do as much as possible without going that far!!"
patients should clearly set their priorities before surgery about what they want most, and let go of what they can afford to set aside.
If you are in the recovery period after canthoplasty, whether it was the first surgery, revision surgery, or re-revision surgery,
you should wait without worrying.^^
