We have already looked at various topics about ectropion,
and today, let’s find out when the right time for correction is if ectropion has developed.

If we are going to talk about the timing of correction,
we should first understand the symptoms of ectropion, right?!
I recommend reading the post above first.^^
The symptoms of ectropion can be broadly divided into three categories.
First, sensory symptoms.

Sensory symptoms can refer to very subjective feelings.
They include things a person can feel on their own, such as dry eyes, eye irritation, and sensitivity to light.
In most cases, people who have only sensory symptoms are difficult to identify visually as having ectropion.
As shown in the photo above, it may look normal from the front,
but when you look upward, you can see that the lower eyelid does not adhere closely to the eyeball.
Second, functional symptoms.

Functional symptoms appear as sensory symptoms gradually worsen.
When dry eye becomes severe, the eye may become red,
and discharge may collect frequently, with tears flowing continuously.
As these problems continue, the cornea may become scratched or develop corneal opacity,
and if it becomes more severe, vision may also decrease.
In this way, functional symptoms refer to things that can be seen as objective indicators.
Third, cosmetic symptoms.

Cosmetic symptoms, as the name suggests, are a state that does not look normal.
This refers to cases where the lower eyelid skin has sagged significantly, making the eye look like it has a white showing around the iris, or where the eyelid turns outward and the mucosa or conjunctiva is exposed.
The cosmetic aspect may certainly cause personal discomfort,
but it tends to feel even more uncomfortable from other people’s perspective.
So when is the right time for correction?!
Ectropion caused by scars from past surgery, such as lower eyelid inversion surgery done in childhood,
is often discovered only after more than a year, or even several years, without knowing whether it can be corrected.
So it is better to correct it as soon as possible.
On the other hand, ectropion caused by recent lower eyelid surgery, such as lower blepharoplasty or lower eyelid inversion surgery,
requires the previous scar to stabilize first.
So unless it is an early correction performed within a week after surgery,
even if there are uncomfortable symptoms and the patient wants correction, the recovery from the previous surgery has not progressed enough,
and surgery should be performed after at least 6 months have passed since the operation.

In practical terms, the timing for correction is when the symptoms are causing discomfort for the person who has them.
Because discomfort is such a subjective feeling,
even if the above symptoms are present, if they are tolerable or do not feel particularly uncomfortable,
people usually will not choose surgery at the cost of the relatively high surgical expense, recovery period after surgery, and possible scars.
However, in the early stages of ectropion, the symptoms above may be mild,
but if they continue and become more severe, your precious eyes may be injured or develop problems.
So for the sake of our eyes, I recommend correcting it as quickly as possible when symptoms appear.
