Sometimes, there are people who did not have double eyelid surgery but still have large, thick double eyelid folds like foreigners.
In many cases, people with this condition have had this type of fold since childhood,
and most simply accept the thick fold and live with it.
However, an excessively large and thick double eyelid fold can look burdensome,
and for men it can give a greasy impression, while for women it can create a sausage-like look.
So to improve this, they undergo monolid surgery to remove the double eyelid fold.

There are three methods for monolid surgery to remove a double eyelid fold.
First, non-incisional monolid surgery
Second, incisional monolid surgery with skin excision
Third, incisional monolid surgery without excision
Non-incisional monolid surgery is only applicable to a very limited number of people,
so most patients undergo incisional monolid surgery.
In incisional monolid surgery, the surgical method differs depending on whether skin is excised,
and the results are also slightly different.
Monolid surgery with skin excision can remove the double eyelid fold without making the eyes smaller than before,
while monolid surgery without skin excision is good for patients who do not want the vertical length of the eyes to become more round and enlarged.

This patient underwent incisional monolid surgery without excision.
I made it into an animated image so that the before-and-after difference would be easy to see at a glance,
but can you feel the difference clearly?
Since the patient wanted the eyes not to become rounder after surgery, the procedure was done without excision,
so the eyes may feel slightly smaller,
but above all, the large and thick double eyelid fold that the patient had before surgery
has been neatly and "properly" removed.
Then there is another thing you may want to check.
That is, whether the eyes close well.
Because there is a rumor that the eyes do not close properly after monolid surgery,
I always include a photo of the eyes closed to show that this is not the case.

This is what it looks like when the eyes are closed.
Even after surgery, the eyes close well.
But compared with before surgery, something feels significantly different afterward,
so it probably needs an explanation?!

In the preoperative photo, you can see a yellow arrow.
The wrinkle below this arrow is the existing large double eyelid fold line.
Because this person had a very pronounced double eyelid fold, the line remains very high even when the eyes are closed.
In the postoperative photo, you can see white arrows and red arrows.
The black dots at the ends of the white arrows were marked during the design process to indicate the preoperative double eyelid fold line,
and what you see on the red arrow below is the incision line.
An incision line was newly created because it was necessary to release the adhesion of the double eyelid,
but you can confirm that the double eyelid crease that was visible even when the eyes were closed, as indicated by the yellow arrow before surgery,
is no longer visible after surgery, as shown below the white arrow.
**** Distinguishing them ****
Some people confuse incision and excision or think they are the same,
so I will explain them in an easy-to-understand way.
Incision is incision,
in the dictionary sense, it means separating the continuity of tissue with a knife,
and as shown above, in the eyelid, it creates a state where the skin is divided.
Excision is excision,
and cutting out and removing a certain area like this is called excision.
In monolid surgery, excision is limited to the skin,
so the muscles in the lower layer are all preserved and do not cause problems.
Because photos taken by the patient may reflect a much more realistic appearance than photos taken at the hospital,
I would like to show you the before-and-after photos taken directly by the patient.
Before surgery / After surgery, 1 month
The photos above are real selfies taken by the patient before and after surgery.
There are quite a few shadows and the photos are a bit dark,
but without any correction, you can see the patient’s eye condition before surgery and at 1 month after surgery exactly as it is.
The dark double eyelid fold has been neatly removed, so only the eyes have changed,
yet it gives the feeling of becoming a completely different person.
Since it is only one month post-op, once more time passes and the swelling goes down,
you will be able to see a much more natural monolid appearance than now.
Depending on the person and the surgical method, the recovery course may differ.
People like this patient, who recover a little quickly, may see good results after just one month,
but there are certainly people who need more than six months to achieve the same result.
In plastic surgery, you must be aware of this before undergoing surgery.
