Hello, this is Director Jo Hyun-woo of 3D Plastic Surgery.
Today’s topic is about square jaw surgery.
Many patients visit the clinic for consultations to remove a large, angular square jaw.
Sometimes, they often ask whether jawline surgery will make the face’s jawline more defined.

As shown in the photo above, in order for the contours of the square jaw bone to stand out well, people with a slender neck generally have a more visible jawline.

It is not that a large square jaw is always more visible, or that a small square jaw is not visible; rather, people with a slender neck and not much facial fat will have well-defined contour lines regardless of the jaw they have.
However, when you undergo square jaw surgery, which reduces the volume of the square jaw bone, the contour line will inevitably become less distinct.
The more is removed, the more blurred the boundary with the neck line becomes.
That is why I always recommend not cutting away too much of the square jaw bone during surgery.
If the jawline becomes less defined and the salivary glands are too exposed, the face may look less attractive.
Some of the people who come for consultations say that our hospital’s surgical results look too natural, but I hope you understand that a natural look that seems almost as if no surgery was done can actually be a more beautiful face.
Let me explain a little more while looking at some cases.

Before surgery
As you can see in the photo above, the patient’s square jaw bone extends downward, but even before surgery the jawline is not clearly visible.
This is partly because there is more facial fat, but also because the neck is somewhat thick.

After surgery
In this case, even if square jaw surgery is performed, the bone is reduced but the jawline becomes even less visible.
To improve this, if jawline liposuction is performed at the same time as square jaw surgery, the jawline can become visible, but because the thickness of the neck cannot be reduced, the jawline still does not stand out dramatically.

Before surgery
On the other hand, in the photo above, the patient has a slender neck and a clearly defined jawline.
For patients like this who do not have much facial fat, even if square jaw surgery is performed, the jawline does not become blurred and remains clearly visible and attractive.

After surgery
You can observe the difference well by comparing before and after.
So far, we have looked at whether jawline surgery makes the facial contours more defined.
If you simply want more distinct contours, square jaw surgery may not be the right choice. If you want to preserve the contour, it may be better to assess the thickness of the neck and the amount of facial fat and consider lifting or liposuction for a more predictable result.
Thank you.
