Hello, I’m Dr. Jo Hyun-woo from Injeong Plastic Surgery.
Today, I’d like to talk about “double chin muscle tightening.”
I’ve mentioned this in several columns and on YouTube.
I explained that when you undergo chin surgery and the bone volume is reduced, or when you have chin recession surgery, or surgery to shorten the length of the chin, a double chin can develop.
If it is not severe, it may barely be noticeable. However, people who already have a bit of fat may end up with a shorter chin bone length after surgery but also a double chin, which can make the appearance a little less attractive.

In such cases, I explain that a double chin can be greatly improved through double chin liposuction, Elastigum lifting, or muscle tightening.
Let me show you a real patient example.

As you can see, there are cases where double chin correction is definitely possible.
However, in addition to these methods, a surgery that has recently become very common is called double chin muscle tightening.
Double chin muscle tightening is a lifting method that fixes the loosened muscle layer around the double chin by tying it together.
The main causes of a double chin include a receding chin, multiple combined causes, salivary glands, and double chin fat.
If you think about the causes of a double chin, the solution for cases that are usually caused by excess fat or by loss of elasticity, where it does not go away even with dieting, is platysma correction.

This is the muscle located right under the chin.
The area under the chin supports the platysma, a muscle that connects from below the chin to the neck. As this muscle weakens, the skin under the chin gradually sags, and empty space forms within the loose skin, creating an environment where fat accumulates more easily.
If chin fat does not go away no matter how much you exercise or control your diet, the cause may lie somewhere other than fat. In most cases like this, improvement can be attempted through double chin muscle tightening.

Some people worry about scars after surgery, but the incision is made as small as about 1 cm under the chin, in a place that is as hidden as possible. With consistent scar management, the scar usually fades gradually after a certain period following surgery, so it has the advantage of not being noticeable.

If you are considering double chin muscle tightening, you may worry that it could be dangerous because it is around the neck.
The blood vessels and nerves are all located inside the platysma, so there is no need to worry too much.
However, if surgery is performed without surgical experience or based only on intuition and theory, it can be risky.
There are various methods for removing a double chin, including liposuction, thread lifting, and laser treatment, and the effective surgical method suitable for each person may differ.
If you are considering double chin muscle tightening, please be sure to receive an accurate diagnosis from a specialist with extensive experience and know-how, and then proceed with the method that is right for you.
Thank you.
