Why don’t pores shrink easily
once they get bigger?

“Lately, my pores seem to be getting more and more noticeable than before.”
When talking with patients about skin concerns, this is one of the most common ones we hear. Especially when looking closely in the mirror, if the pores around the nose or on the cheeks stand out, the skin can look rough and makeup may not sit well.
Many people think pores are simply a sebum problem, but in reality, several factors often work together, including skin elasticity, aging, sebum production, and lifestyle habits. In particular, once pores have enlarged, there is a limit to how much they naturally shrink again, so it is important to understand why pores become larger and manage them appropriately.

Why do pores enlarge?
One of the most common causes of enlarged pores is excessive sebum production. When too much sebum is produced, pressure inside the pores can increase, causing the pore openings to gradually stretch. This change is especially noticeable around the nose and the butterfly zone, where sebum production is active.
In addition, acne and repeated inflammation can also contribute to enlarged pores. As inflammation repeats, the collagen structure within the skin can become damaged, leading to a loss of elasticity. In the end, the support around the pores weakens, and the pores may appear more prominent.

Why enlarged pores do not easily shrink once they have stretched
The reason pores do not easily shrink is related to changes in skin structure. If the collagen and elastic tissue around the pores have already stretched or been damaged, simply reducing sebum may not be enough for them to fully return to their original state.
As we age, skin elasticity decreases, and pores may become longer and more stretched in shape. That is why pores that initially became larger simply because of sebum often become even more noticeable over time as the skin ages. For this reason, pore treatment is often difficult to resolve with simple extraction or sebum control alone.

Why is consistency important in pore treatment?
Pore treatment is less about a dramatic change in a short period and more about gradually improving the skin condition. Because not only sebum control but also skin regeneration and collagen recovery need to happen together, some time may be required.
In actual treatment, depending on the skin condition, laser treatment, skin boosters, and regenerative treatments may be used together. The important thing is to approach the problem according to the current pore condition and skin type, and even after treatment, consistent care and lifestyle adjustments should be maintained to help support a more stable skin condition.

Pores are not simply a problem on the skin’s surface; they are one of the skin changes influenced by multiple factors such as sebum, elasticity, aging, and inflammation. That is why pores that have enlarged once are not easily reduced naturally, and consistent care tailored to the skin condition is important.
Most importantly, the key is to accurately understand the current skin condition and identify what caused the pores to enlarge. Even for the same pore concern, the treatment approach needed can differ depending on skin type and the underlying cause, so we recommend consulting a dermatologist to make a care plan suited to your skin.
