Hello. This is Lucid Dental Clinic.
Today, we’d like to talk about dry mouth, something many people experience
but may easily overlook.
Have you ever felt like your mouth was dry,
or your saliva wasn’t flowing well,
making you uncomfortable?
Did you know that these symptoms may be more than simple thirst
and could be dry mouth?

What Is Dry Mouth?
Dry mouth refers to a condition in which the inside of the mouth becomes abnormally dry.
Our mouths continuously secrete a certain amount of saliva,
which protects the teeth and mucous membranes,
and plays an important role in eating, digestion,
and even speaking.
However, when saliva production decreases
or its quality declines, the mouth can feel dry and uncomfortable.
This goes beyond simple discomfort
and can cause various problems for oral health.
Main Causes of Dry Mouth
Main Causes of Dry Mouth
Dry mouth can occur for a variety of reasons,
more than you might expect.
The main causes include the following.
Medication
Some medications, such as blood pressure drugs,
antidepressants, and antihistamines,
can reduce saliva production.
In particular, as people enter middle age and beyond,
the increase in the number of medications taken is also one reason
why complaints of dry mouth become more common.
Hormonal Changes
In women before and after menopause,
hormonal changes can reduce saliva production.
Smoking, Drinking, and Caffeine Intake
Lifestyle habits also have a major impact on dry mouth.
In particular, coffee, alcohol, and cigarettes can easily dry out the mouth.
Stress and the Habit of Sleeping with Your Mouth Open
When it is hard to breathe through the nose,
people can easily develop the habit of breathing through the mouth,
and this is also one of the main causes of a dry mouth.
Typical Symptoms
If your mouth feels dry and you think of it as just dryness,
that may be a mistake. Dry mouth can appear with various symptoms,
such as the following:
▪️ A dry mouth and a feeling that the tongue is cracked
▪️ Frequent bad breath or discomfort when speaking
▪️ Food is hard to chew, and swallowing is difficult
▪️ A rough or sore tongue
▪️ The surface of the teeth feels rough, and cavities or gum disease develop easily
▪️ The lips or the lining of the mouth frequently become sore or cracked
If these symptoms keep recurring, it may be worth suspecting dry mouth.

What Happens If Dry Mouth Is Left Untreated?
If dry mouth is taken lightly and left untreated,
the following problems can occur:
Increased cavities and gum disease
Saliva helps wash away bacteria in the mouth and regulate acidity.
When saliva decreases, bacteria can grow more easily,
and the risk of cavities and gum disease also increases.
Causes bad breath
As oral bacteria increase, bad breath can become more severe.
Difficulty eating
Saliva helps soften food and aids digestion,
so if there is not enough saliva, eating itself can become difficult.
Cheilitis and repeated mouth inflammation
Frequent sore spots or ulcers in the mouth can also be an extension of dry mouth.

Self-Check Test for Bad Breath
If 3 or more of the following apply to you,
you should suspect the possibility of dry mouth.
- My mouth is often dry when I wake up in the morning.
- My mouth feels sticky, and I often have a white coating on my tongue.
- If I don’t drink water often, speaking becomes uncomfortable.
- My lips stick together easily when I speak.
- My mouth frequently becomes sore, or my lips crack.
- After eating, my mouth feels sore or sensitive to cold.
- My bad breath feels worse than usual.

How to Prevent Dry Mouth
Fortunately, dry mouth can be prevented and improved
just by changing a few daily habits.
Drink Water Often
Rather than drinking a large amount at once, it is better to drink small amounts frequently.
Reduce Caffeine and Alcohol
These can trigger a diuretic effect, draw water from the body,
and worsen dryness in the mouth.
Maintain Indoor Humidity
Especially in winter, it is a good idea to use a humidifier
to keep the indoor air at an appropriate level.
Massage the Salivary Glands
Gently pressing the areas under both sides of the jaw and in front of the ears with your hands can help stimulate saliva production.
Use Sugar-Free Gum or Candy
These are effective in stimulating saliva production.
However, please be sure to choose sugar-free products.
Regular Dental Checkups
Early detection and management of dry mouth are important.
Checking your oral condition regularly
and getting professional advice can be a great help.
If even a small discomfort in daily life continues,
please don’t just ignore it and be sure to get it checked at least once.
Lucid Dental Clinic will always be with you
so that we can help protect your oral health for a long time.
