Hello, this is Lucid Dental Clinic.
Have you ever felt that something looks awkward
whenever you smile?
Your teeth may be aligned and well cared for,
but have you ever been told that an uneven gum line
or dark gum color makes your overall impression look dull?
Especially when your gums show a lot while smiling,
or when the gums stand out before the teeth do,
many people end up becoming cautious about smiling
without even realizing it.
In today’s era, when our “expressions” are often
visible in daily life, concerns about gums can feel
more significant than expected.
That is why, in addition to orthodontic treatment and
teeth whitening, interest in “gum contouring,” which
refines gum height, shape, and color, has also been growing.
Today, we will take a look at who may need gum contouring,
how the procedure is performed,
and what to keep in mind after treatment.

What Is Gum Contouring?
Gum contouring is sometimes mistaken for a procedure
purely for cosmetic purposes, but in fact it is a treatment
that helps restore a harmonious line between the teeth and gums
and may also have a positive effect on oral hygiene management.
When the gum line is asymmetrical, when too much gum
shows while smiling, when the gums are dark red due to pigmentation,
or when they look thick and swollen and make the impression seem dull,
or when the tooth roots appear excessively exposed,
treatment that improves the shape, color, and height of the gums
is what we call gum contouring.

When Should You Consider It?
If two or more of the following apply to you,
you may want to consider gum contouring.
-Too much gum shows when smiling
-The gums have receded, exposing the tooth roots
-The gum heights on both sides are asymmetrical
-The gums are dark or deeply colored
-The gums appear swollen overall
-The teeth look too short and resemble baby teeth
-The smile does not feel natural and seems awkward

Types of Gum Contouring
Gum resection
This is a method of cutting away gums that are abnormally
long or have dropped down, creating a balanced line.
It is performed when the teeth look too short or when the gums
stand out prominently while smiling.
Gum whitening
When the gums appear dark due to melanin pigmentation,
the surface of the gums is refined to encourage healthy,
natural pink gums to show.
Gum grafting
When the gums have receded and the tooth roots are exposed,
gum tissue from the palate or an adjacent area is grafted
to restore a stable form.
It may also help people who have experienced sensitivity
from exposed roots.
What About the Pain?
Many people may feel intimidated just by the idea
of “touching the gums.”
However, most gum contouring procedures are performed
under local anesthesia and are relatively simple,
so pain during the procedure is usually minimal.
There may be some swelling or discomfort after the procedure,
but with proper care and following the treatment instructions,
recovery generally proceeds without major issues.

Important Things to Follow After the Procedure
To support recovery and maintain stable results after gum contouring,
please be sure to follow the precautions below.
-
No drinking alcohol or smoking for at least one week
This may interfere with wound healing and cause inflammation.
-
Avoid hot and irritating foods
Very hot soups, spicy seasonings, and similar foods may irritate
the treated area.
-
Avoid foods that cause staining
Please avoid coffee, wine, curry, chocolate, and similar items.
-
Brush with a soft, fine-bristled toothbrush
Do not scrub hard; brush gently.
-
Do not use a straw
The suction force may interfere with clotting.
Gum contouring is not simply a treatment that “fixes only the gums.”
It is an important choice that enhances your expressions,
your overall impression, and the completeness of your smile.
If you always hide your smile in photos and have felt
uncomfortable whenever you laugh, gum contouring may be a good
starting point for easing that discomfort.
Lucid Dental Clinic considers your facial shape,
teeth line, gum height, and other factors comprehensively
to pursue the most harmonious and natural result.
Rather than making unconditional recommendations,
we will begin by listening to your concerns and providing
thorough guidance.
Lucid Dental Clinic will be with you so that your smile
is no longer hidden.
