Hello.
I’m Ahn Young-seok, the chief director of Make Dental Clinic.
When talking about laminate procedures,
the expression “shaving down the teeth” is often used.
Because of that phrase,
some people feel a vague sense of burden
or anxiety.
However, that expression is somewhat different
from what the procedure actually means.
Rather than “shaving,”
“trimming” or “adjusting the shape” is a more
accurate description.
Since laminate is prepared so that it can adhere
stably to the teeth and complete overall harmony
and a natural smile,
please keep in mind that it does not assume
unnecessary or excessive reduction.
Make Dental Clinic’s laminate is not about taking away,
but about adding beauty.
- How much is shaved? The concept of reduction amount
So, how much is actually trimmed?
The amount reduced can vary depending on the individual’s condition and the goal of improvement,
but in general, the enamel is often adjusted as little as possible,
usually by about 0.3–0.7 mm.
0.3 mm is similar to the thickness of a single sheet of paper,
and 0.7 mm is also an extremely fine level,
about the thickness of a thin fingernail.
By preparing the tooth only within the necessary range like this,
the restoration can be made thin while still maintaining sufficient strength.
As a result, it helps prevent the restoration from looking too thick
or causing a foreign-body sensation when closing the lips.

- Which part is shaved?
The main area trimmed is the “front surface,”
that is, the enamel visible when smiling.
Enamel is the hardest tissue in the human body,
and is made up of an inorganic layer with no nerves or blood vessels.
When it undergoes an etching process that creates tiny pores on the surface,
adhesion increases, creating favorable conditions for securely fixing the restoration.
By contrast, dentin, which lies beneath the enamel,
contains microscopic tubule structures connected to nerves,
so it is more sensitive to external stimulation,
and its adhesion is also lower than that of enamel.
Therefore, trimming within a range that preserves as much enamel as possible
helps reduce sensitivity and maintain the long-term stability of the restoration.
Do not compare only the price.
What matters is the philosophy and technical skill behind the treatment.
- Not everyone is shaved by the same amount.
As mentioned above, the reduction amount was explained as about 0.3–0.7 mm,
but not everyone is trimmed using the same standard.
The actual range of reduction is adjusted differently depending on each person’s shape, alignment,
and the direction in which improvement is desired.
For example, if a tooth is relatively protruded
or the alignment is uneven and the front surface sticks out a lot,
then a relatively larger amount of reduction may be needed
so that the teeth do not look thicker after the laminate is attached.
The amount of reduction is not determined by a simple number;
rather, the medical team carefully judges and adjusts it while considering the characteristics of each tooth
and the overall harmony of the smile.
Make Dental Clinic values the process.
Precise diagnosis and design create perfect results.
- Is no-prep laminate really possible?
When considering treatment, many people are interested in the term “no-prep.”
Literally, it means attaching laminate with almost no shaving.
In general, it may be considered in the following cases.
✅ The spaces between the teeth are sufficient, or the teeth are small like peg laterals, so a direction that supplements shape or volume is needed.
---
✅ The teeth are positioned inward or some wear has occurred, so a slight change in volume would not affect the bite or speech.
✅ There is no severe discoloration, and the existing shade is relatively bright, so color adjustment is possible with only volume compensation.
Make Dental Clinic treats patients with the hope that no one suffers from indiscriminate reduction.
- What problems can occur if the amount of reduction is insufficient?
First, the laminate may look relatively thick.
If it is placed without enough space for attachment,
the teeth may appear to protrude forward or give an overall bulky impression.
As a result, the harmony with the lips may look awkward,
or a foreign-body sensation may be felt when closing the mouth or speaking,
which can lower aesthetic satisfaction.
Second, limitations may arise in aesthetic expression.
In particular, if the existing color is relatively dark and brightness improvement is needed,
insufficient reduction space may limit the ability to achieve the desired level of color and translucency.
In this case, the color of the underlying tooth may show through,
or the result may feel somewhat dull.
Third, caution is needed in terms of adhesion stability and hygiene management.
If the edges of the laminate do not adhere evenly to the surface,
small steps or gaps may form at the boundary.
These areas can become places where food debris or bacteria are likely to remain,
and over time, this may lead to cavities or gum discomfort.
Tooth reduction is performed precisely, only as much as necessary.
To reduce concerns about the amount of reduction during laminate treatment
and achieve a satisfying result,
the most important starting point is
precise diagnosis and sufficient communication with the medical team.
Since everyone’s teeth differ in alignment, shape,
size, color, gum condition, and bite relationship,
it is difficult to apply a single standard.
The medical team comprehensively examines these factors
and individually determines the necessary range for laminate
and the appropriate amount of reduction for each tooth.
In this process, it can be helpful to ask questions such as,
“How much reduction is needed in my case?”
or “Why is this amount of reduction necessary?”
and receive a sufficient explanation.
Through this process, you can reduce unnecessary worry
and think about the direction that suits you best.
Thank you.
