Hello.
I’m Ahn Young-seok, CEO and chief dentist of Make Dental Clinic.
Couples preparing for marriage, one of life’s major milestones,
spend truly busy days.
Among the concerns often heard during that process,
surprisingly, one is the “expression when smiling.”
This is because if you cannot smile naturally due to concerns about your teeth,
or if you cover your mouth, the expression in important moments
can remain awkward.
For this reason, quite a few people who are about to get married
consider laminate treatment for the shape or color of their teeth.
Laminates can make a world of difference depending on
who performs them and how they are done.
- Building a wedding smile plan for the bride and groom
From March through the sunny days of May,
it is truly the “wedding season.”
People holding ceremonies during this time often dream of a warm and fresh image,
like the spring sunlight.
So rather than simply considering tooth color,
a smile design that comprehensively reflects face shape,
lip movement when smiling, and the person’s overall impression is needed.
The two of you should have tooth tones that do not feel too mismatched,
while still allowing each person’s charm to stand out.
Rather than an artificial change,
the key is to add natural vitality
within a range that does not damage the original impression.

- In the busy wedding-planning schedule, when is the right time for laminate treatment?
Wedding preparation schedules are so packed
that they can be broken down day by day.
That is why we often get asked, “If I start now,
will it look natural by the wedding?”
Compared with other dental treatments,
laminate treatment is relatively short in duration,
but there is still a physical amount of time needed
for the prosthetic to harmonize with the gums and for the patient
to adapt to the changed smile and make natural expressions.
So the most recommended timing is at least one month
before the wedding photoshoot or the ceremony itself,
and ideally about two months in advance if there is room.
Starting at that time allows enough leeway
to finish any small post-treatment bite adjustments
or aftercare if needed.
Beauty that remains unchanged over time,

- Details that make even close-up wedding photos look confident
Recently, wedding shoots have increasingly favored snapshot-style photos
that capture the couple’s natural moments,
rather than standardized poses.
In particular, in close-up photos taken with high-resolution lenses,
even small gaps between teeth, wear at the edges,
or differences in color can be seen relatively clearly.
In this respect, laminates are sometimes used to tidy up details
such as the shape and color of the teeth.
Rather than simply straightening the alignment of the teeth,
adjusting the horizontal and vertical proportions of the teeth
to match the shape and movement of the lips can create a softer
and more refined impression.
We find not just pretty teeth,
but the teeth that suit you best.
- Natural-looking teeth that take the lighting at the ceremony into account
The lighting at wedding halls is brighter and stronger
than in everyday spaces, so the texture of the face and teeth
can stand out more clearly.
In such an environment, not only color but also translucency
and surface texture are easy to notice.
If the prosthetic is too opaque
or is an excessively bright color, the teeth alone may stand out
under the lights.
That is why, in laminate design for people preparing for a wedding,
consideration of how much light passes through the teeth—that is, the transmittance—is important.
Reflecting the characteristics of natural teeth,
a method using ceramic materials composed of multiple layers
may be used to allow light to pass through naturally.

- A conservative approach that takes the burden of tooth reduction into account
One of the biggest concerns when considering laminates
is the burden of tooth reduction.
Reducing teeth too much for aesthetic reasons,
teeth that must be used for a lifetime,
is also something that requires careful judgment.
Fortunately, with recent advances in technology and materials,
the procedure can now be done with minimal reduction,
and in some cases with almost no reduction at all.
This is an approach that preserves the outermost layer, enamel,
while improving shape only within the necessary range.
In particular, for engaged couples whose schedules are busy
with wedding preparations from March to May,
there may be great concern about pain or sensitivity after the procedure.
From that perspective, a conservative approach is sometimes considered
an option that reduces the burden on the teeth.

- Choosing colors that suit the ceremony style
Choosing the color of laminates is less about simply picking
the brightest shade and more about considering harmony
with the overall impression.
For the bride, we look at how it matches the white tone of the dress
she will wear on the wedding day and the makeup colors as well.
For the groom, color is considered based on the skin tone and
the atmosphere of the tuxedo to help create a more stable impression.
An overly bright color can instead make the complexion stand out too much
or create excessive contrast, so a careful approach is needed.
For this reason, selecting a color that reflects individual features
such as eye color and skin brightness is important,
and thorough consultation may take place while comparing
multiple shades through virtual simulations.

The purpose of laminates is not to copy someone else’s smile exactly,
but to bring out natural strengths based on each person’s unique impression.
Rather than an artificial change, a smile in which one’s own flaws
have been neatly refined without being excessive gives a much more comfortable impression,
and that naturalness is bound to be conveyed to others as well.
At the moment you step onto the virgin road with a fluttering heart,
we hope you can smile comfortably by fully feeling the time with those beside you,
rather than worrying about your teeth.
Thank you.
