Treating Cavities Without Overtreatment
Inactive caries
Active caries
When we go to the dentist, we often face a dilemma.
It happens when receiving cavity treatment:
A cavity that one clinic says must be treated
Another clinic says does not need treatment
Why do these different diagnoses come out in the first place?
Because it is hard to know the reason behind them,
we end up in a dilemma about whether to treat it or not.
Gangnam Saro Dental Clinic will explain why these diagnoses differ
so that cavities can be treated without overtreatment.
Cavities

Cavities are related to the activity of bacteria.
When bacteria break down the sugar in food debris stuck to the teeth
into lactic acid,
acid is produced and damages the tooth,
which is dental caries, or cavities.
Depending on the extent of dental caries,
stage 1 cavities limited to the enamel
stage 2 cavities limited to the dentin
stage 3 cavities that spread to pulpitis
stage 4 cavities that lead to pulp necrosis
these are the different stages of cavities.
Inactive caries

As mentioned, cavities are related to bacterial activity,
but there are also cases where bacterial activity stops.
In stage 1 cavities limited to the enamel,
through the tooth's defense mechanisms,
bacterial activity is stopped.
This is called inactive caries,
inactive caries,
or non-active caries.
Diagnosis of inactive caries

To determine whether the cavity is active or inactive,
an instrument called a probe is used.
When you scrape the tooth surface,
if the tooth is not scratched, it is inactive caries;
if the tooth is scratched, it is active caries.
At this point, views on the cavity may differ.
Based on the patient's oral condition and usual hygiene habits,
if it is judged likely to progress into active caries,
cavity treatment may be recommended,
and if not, it may be said that cavity treatment is not necessary.
