Mok-dong Melasma Treatment
How Should You Choose a Laser?
Mok-dong Melasma

Hello.
I am Kim Jin-hyun, head doctor at the Mok-dong branch of You&I Clinic.
If you have looked online while considering melasma treatment, you probably already know that lasers are commonly used for treatment.
But there are so many different melasma treatment lasers, aren’t there?

It is not easy to determine which device is better or which one is the best fit for you.
Since this is not a lesion that can be easily resolved just by using a strong laser, it will be helpful to carefully review the characteristics of each device and make a decision.
So, we prepared some useful tips for choosing a melasma treatment laser!

Important points when choosing a melasma treatment laser
If you receive laser treatment that does not suit your skin, melasma may actually become darker, or side effects such as increased skin sensitivity may occur.
So, there are several factors that need to be carefully considered.
- Can the laser intensity be adjusted according to the depth of the melasma?

Melasma can exist in both the epidermis and the dermis at the same time.
In particular, when melasma has spread into the dermis, a laser that can properly penetrate deeply is needed.
What matters here is not simply whether the laser is strong, but whether the energy can be delivered appropriately to the area where pigmentation has occurred and whether the energy can be precisely controlled.
- Is it possible to combine pigmentation treatment and vascular treatment?

Melasma is sometimes related to blood vessel dilation.
Therefore, if you check whether there is a laser device that can help constrict blood vessels, treatment can be carried out more efficiently.
- Can pigmentation be removed without damaging the skin?

Melasma treatment is a long-term process.
So multiple laser sessions may be necessary.
And over that long period, pigmentation needs to be gradually removed while protecting the skin barrier.
If the skin is irritated every time treatment is performed, the skin will ultimately become more sensitive and weaker, won’t it?
For that reason, it is helpful to use laser equipment that can minimize skin damage as much as possible while properly targeting only the pigmentation.

Types of melasma lasers
Considering the factors above, I will introduce two types of laser devices commonly used for melasma treatment.
Clarity II can perform both pigmentation treatment and vascular treatment at the same time.

Clarity II
It is a dual-wavelength laser that can use Alexandrite and Nd:YAG wavelengths simultaneously.
Alexandrite is mainly used to remove pigmentation located in the epidermis,
while Nd:YAG can penetrate deep into the dermis and is mainly used for vascular constriction and treating deep pigmentation.
It also comes with a cooling system that helps protect the skin during the procedure and reduce pain.
So it is a device that can manage both melasma and vascular dilation at the same time.
Fotona StarWalker _ Combination of Pico and Nano Technology

Pico lasers break pigment particles into very fine pieces, allowing them to be naturally eliminated from the skin.
Nano lasers have the feature of delivering energy to deeply embedded pigment and expanding the treatment range.
The combination of these two advantages is what defines Fotona StarWalker.
So, compared with conventional strong lasers, it can reduce the burden of irritation and still treat melasma, making it suitable even for those with sensitive skin.
It also combines the characteristics of nano lasers, so it can be used for deeply located melasma as well.

How to prevent melasma from recurring
The most important thing to prevent melasma from recurring is ‘UV protection.’

Because melasma is a pigment disorder that appears as melanin increases, it can easily recur when exposed to ultraviolet rays.
So you need to apply sunscreen frequently.
But every time I talk about the importance of sunscreen, I often get this question:
“Do I really need to apply sunscreen even indoors?”
Yes, we recommend that you always apply sunscreen even indoors.
Even indoors, ultraviolet rays entering through windows can penetrate the skin and trigger melasma, so even if it is bothersome, you should still be careful.

When deciding on melasma laser treatment, it is important not to simply choose a device with strong energy, but to choose a method that suits your skin condition.
Therefore, after checking the various devices used for melasma treatment in advance as we did today,
I recommend visiting a dermatology clinic and carefully choosing the laser that is right for you through a skin diagnosis.
I would be very happy if today’s post was helpful for those who are struggling with melasma.
