Yangcheon-gu freckles
Will they really become completely clear if you only get treatment?
Yangcheon-gu freckles

Hello.
I am Kim Jin-hyun, chief director of UNNI Clinic Mokdong Branch.
Whenever you look in the mirror and notice the small brown spots dotted on your face, they can be hard to ignore.
Even if you put on heavy makeup, these blemishes are not easy to cover, so you may keep worrying about them all the time.
So when you search the internet for treatment, you often find people using the terms melasma, blemishes, and freckles interchangeably, making it harder than expected to find a clear treatment method for the pigmentation you have.
That is why today I prepared time to properly explain what freckles are and how to distinguish them from other pigment lesions.
If you focus for just 3 minutes from now, you will be able to find a direction for how to start treating freckles.^^

What are freckles?
Freckles refer to small brownish spots that mainly develop due to genetic factors and exposure to ultraviolet rays.

They usually start to become noticeable in childhood and are common in people with fair skin or blond or reddish-brown hair.
That is why freckles are especially common among Westerners.
They are relatively small, about 1 to 3 mm in diameter, and appear as multiple scattered brown to yellow-brown spots.

Genetics play a major role, and they become darker with frequent exposure to ultraviolet rays, while in winter they may become relatively lighter.
Because they are an epidermal pigment, they have the characteristic of being relatively easy to remove with laser treatment.
However, recurrence is common, so they are considered a rather difficult lesion to treat.

How to distinguish freckles from melasma
Some people often confuse freckles with melasma.
At first glance, both are brown spots, so it is easy to mix them up.
However, the two differ greatly in terms of cause, shape, and age group in which they appear.
Melasma tends to result from a combination of hormonal changes, ultraviolet exposure, and genetic predisposition.

Melasma
Brown to gray-brown patches often spread symmetrically across the central face.
They tend to have relatively blurry borders and appear over a broad area.
If laser is applied too aggressively, it can worsen, so long-term maintenance treatment such as whitening ointments, low-intensity toning, and oral medication is needed.
Freckles begin to stand out noticeably around puberty.

If they have been present since childhood, it is safe to assume they are almost certainly freckles.
Since the pigment is mainly in the epidermal layer, the borders tend to be clear, and they become darker in summer when ultraviolet rays are stronger and lighter in winter.
They tend to respond relatively well to laser treatment, and the key to preventing recurrence is sun protection.
In other words, melasma can be more difficult to treat because hormones and ultraviolet rays work together, but freckles are mostly darkened by genetics and ultraviolet rays, so they are relatively more likely to be removed cleanly with laser treatment.
However, freckles recur very easily, so post-treatment care needs extra attention.

Dermatology clinic treatment methods for freckles
Because freckles are an epidermal pigment, if the right laser is chosen properly, significant improvement can be expected.

However, the choice of procedure can vary depending on the individual's skin type, the density of freckles, and whether other pigments are also present.
If the skin is sensitive or if freckles are the only clearly visible pigment without deeper pigmentation, regular laser toning alone may be sufficient.
If you take good care of scab management and the risk of hyperpigmentation, you can expect the freckles to fade fairly quickly.

If there is a history of frequent recurrence, or if the pigment has penetrated deeper layers, more focused treatment through pico toning may be helpful.
If complex pigmentation or redness is also present, pico toning or laser toning may be used in combination.
Therefore, before treating freckles, it is important to receive a systematic pre-treatment diagnosis.

Freckles, unlike melasma, are often epidermal pigmentation, so if you combine proper laser treatment, sun protection, and whitening care, they can improve quite noticeably.
However, it may be difficult to eliminate them permanently with just one treatment, and you should remember that they are a lifestyle-related pigment that can darken again with a lot of sun exposure!
I would be very happy if today's post helped you understand how to approach freckles treatment.^^
