When skin tone becomes dull due to spots or melasma, many people first look into laser treatments.

These days, if you search online, you’ll see the term “pico toning” more often.

Both pico toning and regular laser toning are procedures intended to treat pigmentation.

However, because they differ in energy delivery, the strength of the effect, and the degree of skin irritation, it is important to choose the one that best suits your skin type and the changes you want.

So today, I’ll clearly explain what makes pico toning different and what kinds of devices are used.

Pico toning is one type of laser treatment aimed at improving pigmentation disorders, evening out skin tone, and restoring overall skin texture.

As the name suggests, it refers to a “skin tone improvement treatment using picosecond-level energy.”

By delivering high-output energy to the skin for a much shorter time than conventional nanosecond lasers, it precisely breaks down melanin pigment while reducing skin irritation.

If regular laser toning gradually lightens pigment through repeated low-output exposure,

pico toning was designed to break down pigment more quickly and effectively, even with a single treatment.

In particular, because it finely fragments and removes pigment deep within the skin, it can act on multiple concerns such as melasma, spots, fine wrinkles, and pores that previously responded slowly to treatment.

However, pico toning is not automatically the best choice for every skin type.

For example, if the skin is very sensitive or if a person has already experienced post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, excessive pico toning can instead become irritating.

In such cases, it may be necessary to adjust the treatment intensity or combine it with a low-output approach.

Also, pico toning is not something where you should expect a short-term effect right away; it is a treatment where you should expect gradual brightening through multiple sessions. So even if the change is not immediately visible after treatment, that does not mean it is ineffective.

Mokdong Pico Toning Which device is good?

When considering pico laser treatments, many people only know well-known devices such as PicoSure or PicoPlus.

However, in reality, there are various devices, and depending on your skin condition, less well-known devices such as PicoCare Majesty or PicoAlex may be more suitable.

Meanwhile, PicoAlex is an Alexandrite-based picosecond laser developed by Candela in the United States, and it is a device that uses a single 755nm wavelength.

This wavelength has a very high absorption rate for melanin, showing good results in treating pigmentation lesions close to the skin surface, such as freckles, sun spots, and superficial melasma.

PicoAlex is especially useful because it reduces thermal damage during treatment and is good at selectively destroying pigment, making it helpful when treating shallow pigmentation or when trying to reduce burden on pigment-sensitive skin.

Also, because the 755nm wavelength stimulates collagen remodeling more strongly than other wavelengths, additional effects can be expected not only in pigment removal but also in improving skin texture and elasticity.

Of course, because it uses a single wavelength, it may have some limitations for stubborn melasma deep in the dermis, mixed pigmentation, or deep Ota’s nevus.

In such cases, combination treatment with a device like Majesty, which can use various wavelength combinations, may be necessary.

What matters is not “which device is better,” but first considering which device is more suitable for which lesion.

Another device, PicoCare Majesty, has recently been widely used for combination treatments such as tattoo removal, melasma, Ota’s nevus, skin texture improvement, and elasticity treatment.

Because it offers high stability in energy delivery and allows precise adjustment of pulse duration, it can be finely tuned according to the patient’s skin condition.

There is a general perception that domestic devices are inferior to imported ones,

but in actual clinical settings, medical staff often prefer them because they can reduce skin irritation while still responding selectively to pigment.

Pico laser treatment is just as dependent on the practitioner’s experience and judgment as it is on the device itself.

Even with the same device, the results can vary greatly depending on treatment intensity, number of shots, and the method of irradiation.

In particular, for pigmented lesions such as melasma or spots, using a strong laser excessively can instead cause post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and the skin may become more sensitive, making treatment more difficult.

On the other hand, if the intensity is set too low, the expected effect may not appear, which can lead to the need for repeated treatments.

If your skin is sensitive, or if you have already received laser treatments several times in the past, you may need combination treatment that takes multiple factors into account rather than one strong session.
