Mokdong milia, those white spots that appear on the face,
how can they be removed cleanly?
Mokdong milia
Hello.
I am Kim Jin-hyeon, Chief Director of U&I Clinic Mokdong Branch.

Small white spots around the eyes may seem like nothing, but they keep catching your eye and can become irritating.
These symptoms are likely to be milia.
Milia may look simple, but they are lodged deep within the skin structure.
Because they are a skin condition that can lead to pigmentation or scarring if handled the wrong way, a careful approach is necessary.
Today, I’ll summarize what milia are, why you should not try to squeeze them yourself, and how they should be treated.

What kind of condition is it?
Milia are a type of small cyst that forms inside the skin.
They usually appear as white, firm bumps about 1–2 mm in size, and develop when sebum cannot escape and becomes trapped inside the skin.
They commonly appear around the eyes, but they can also form on various parts of the face, such as the forehead, cheeks, and chin.

However, they are often confused with ‘syringomas,’ which can appear in similar areas.
Syringomas are benign tumors related to sweat glands. Compared with milia, they are often more widespread or clustered, and they may appear as skin-colored bumps.
Although they may look similar, their causes and treatment methods are different, so a careful diagnosis by a medical professional is important.

Milia can occur at any age. They can appear in infants, and in adults they often develop after trauma, ultraviolet exposure, or dermatitis.
Even if they are not a serious condition, they can still cause cosmetic stress, so proper management and treatment are needed.

Is it okay to squeeze it yourself?
Milia are located near the dermis rather than on the surface of the skin, so they do not come out easily just by squeezing them with your hands.
If you try to force them out, the surrounding skin tissue can be damaged, leading to inflammation, pigmentation, or scars that remain for a long time.
In particular, the skin around the eyes is thin and sensitive, so extra caution is needed.

Some people try to disinfect a needle or acne extractor and squeeze them out themselves,
but this method carries a high risk of infection and can end up causing greater skin damage than treatment at a clinic.
Some people also hope that it will naturally disappear with exfoliation, but because milia are located deeper than the epidermis, simple exfoliation will not solve the problem.
Excessive exfoliation can instead damage the skin barrier and make the skin around the eyes even more sensitive.

How should it be treated?
Because milia are located in the deeper layers of the skin, they cannot be removed by simple squeezing or exfoliation.
In clinics, they are usually removed using laser-based treatment.
Laser treatment uses the principle of instantly evaporating moisture in the lesion area, allowing milia to be precisely removed while reducing damage to the surrounding tissue.

The treatment is relatively simple and quick, and if the treated area is sensitive, local anesthesia may be used to reduce pain.
After the procedure, a small scab forms, but in most cases it falls off naturally within a few days, and daily life is not greatly affected.
During the recovery period after the procedure, it is important to consistently use a mild, non-irritating moisturizer and sunscreen, and to avoid the habit of touching the area with your hands.
Just following these small care habits can make recovery much faster.
Today, we covered the information that people concerned about milia removal in Mokdong should know.
There are many unfortunate cases in which self-treatment, started because of small spots around the eyes that are bothersome, ends up causing skin damage and scarring.

Milia are a skin condition that can be safely removed with an accurate diagnosis and a simple treatment.
Therefore, rather than trying to squeeze them yourself or solve them through exfoliation, it is better to receive proper diagnosis and treatment with the help of medical professionals at the right time.
I hope this article helps ease your concerns about milia and find the right treatment direction.
