“Can melasma really be treated?”

This is one of the most common questions many of our visitors ask.

In particular, melasma is not just a simple pigment lesion; it is notorious for its high recurrence potential and difficult treatment.

If you have also been struggling with melasma for a long time and have looked into laser treatments such as Pico Toning,

PicoCare Majesty, I think this article may be helpful, even if only a little,

in guiding your treatment direction.

So, let’s take a closer look at why melasma occurs, why it is difficult to treat, and which treatment methods have recently

been shown to be effective.

1. Why does melasma occur, and why is it more common in women?

Melasma is a brown pigment deposition that appears symmetrically, mainly on both cheekbones, the forehead,

and around the mouth. On the surface, it may look like

simple blemishes, but internally, the problem is excessive activity of melanocytes.

The reason melasma occurs more often in women is closely related to hormonal changes.

Pregnancy, taking oral contraceptives, and hormonal changes before and after menopause can

stimulate melanin production and worsen melasma.

Another important factor is ultraviolet light. Ultraviolet light stimulates melanocytes, making melasma darker, and even during treatment,

the condition can easily recur if UV exposure is repeated.

In addition, melasma often involves pigment spreading into deeper layers of the skin,

so it is difficult to expect satisfactory improvement with methods that treat only the surface of the skin.

This is also why melasma is called a “refractory pigment disorder.”

At this point, you may be wondering, “Then how should it be treated?” I’ll explain that next.

2. Is Pico Toning really effective?

We looked at it through a paper

melasma and pigmented lesions with a low fluence

1,064-nm Nd:YAG laser in Republic of Korea:

retrospective study

A recent study in Korea related to the 250-picosecond PicoCare Majesty laser showed fairly

encouraging results for melasma treatment.

This study was a retrospective analysis of 87 melasma patients from April to September 2022,

using a 250-picosecond 1064nm Nd:YAG laser. Most were women in their 40s,

and the data were based on results after up to 5 treatment sessions.

As a result, pigmentation scores on polarized light and UV imaging showed statistically significant decreases across the entire face and individual areas, and skin tone scores also improved significantly,

especially around the under-eye area.

What was interesting was that patient satisfaction also increased significantly.

Pigmentation satisfaction improved from 2.36 points to 3.21 points, and skin tone satisfaction improved from

2.53 points to 3.34 points.

PicoCare Majesty

Pico lasers have a much shorter pulse duration than conventional Q-switched lasers,

so they can break down melanin more finely while reducing thermal damage.

As a result, they are known to reduce the risk of pain, redness, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (P.I.H.).

However, the effect was not uniform across all areas. Improvement was

more noticeable under the eyes, but in the cheekbone area, some scores actually declined.

In other words, responses may differ depending on the location and depth of the melasma, so an accurate diagnosis before treatment is essential.

3. After Pico Toning treatment,

please be sure to follow these points

No matter how good the procedure is, if post-treatment care is not done properly, melasma can become darker again.

Especially immediately after treatment, the skin is in a state of being temporarily very sensitive.

If exposed to UV light during this period, not only will you fail to see treatment benefits, but pigment may form again.

Therefore, be sure to apply sunscreen carefully before going out,

and it is best to also use physical protection such as hats or parasols.

Please avoid exfoliation or using irritating cosmetics for at least 3 to 5 days.

Also, because the skin barrier is weakened after treatment, proper hydration and soothing care should be combined so that skin recovery can proceed more smoothly.

In summary, melasma is not a condition that ends with a single treatment. Laser procedures,

along with UV protection and lifestyle improvements, must be done together to reduce recurrence and

achieve more satisfying results.

Melasma is difficult to treat, but it is also a condition that can darken again at any time if it is not managed.

So what matters is not so much “which procedure you receive,” but rather “establishing the treatment direction that is right for you,

and managing it consistently.”

but a journey that requires steady care like a marathon.
