I will explain in detail, based on research papers,
how the differences vary by skin type
and recommend suitable devices as well.

- Why is skin type important
for laser hair removal?

The principle of laser hair removal is to use light energy
that reacts with the melanin in the hair roots
to remove the hair.
The key concept here is
"selective photothermolysis."
For the procedure to be effective and safe,
the laser must act selectively on the melanin in the hair follicles
without affecting the surrounding tissue.

Since melanin is also present in the skin itself,
darker skin tends to contain more melanin in the epidermis.
This increases the possibility that the laser energy
will be absorbed by the skin's surface rather than the hair follicles.
In other words, even when the same device is used
at the same energy level, the results may differ depending on skin type.
An incorrect choice may also lead to side effects
such as pain or skin damage.
Many people, including East Asians, tend to have
higher levels of melanin and relatively darker skin.
This is precisely why device selection is particularly important
when undergoing laser hair removal.

The answer is no.

Nd:YAG Laser Hair Removal in Fitzpatrick Skin Types IV to VI

This paper reports clinical findings showing that
1,064 nm Nd:YAG laser treatment can provide effective
and safe hair removal even for darker skin types.
The reason lies in the characteristics of the wavelength.
As the wavelength becomes longer, light penetrates deeper into the skin,
and a smaller proportion is absorbed by epidermal melanin.
As a result, energy can be delivered to the hair follicles
without damaging the epidermis, even in darker skin.
In particular, the paper explains that using a DCD
(dynamic cooling system) together with a 1,064 nm Nd:YAG laser
further enhances epidermal protection.

Even after just three sessions, a noticeable reduction in hair
can be seen, while the skin tone and surface also appear
to have remained clear after treatment.
Of course, the number of sessions and the results
may vary depending on an individual's skin condition
and hair density.

The devices used for laser hair removal
can broadly be categorized by wavelength.
Devices using the 755 nm Alexandrite wavelength
respond well to light skin and coarse hair,
while the 1,064 nm Nd:YAG is a long-wavelength laser
that can be used relatively safely even on darker skin,
as explained above.

GentleMax laser hair removal
A laser hair removal device equipped with dual wavelengths,
such as GentleMax, which can use both wavelengths,
allows the appropriate wavelength to be selected
depending on skin type and treatment area,
making effective hair removal possible.
If it also has a cooling system,
it can further reduce pain during treatment
and the risk of heat-related skin damage. ^^
Air cooling continuously cools the skin
throughout the procedure, while the DCD method
sprays cooling gas immediately before the laser is emitted
to protect the epidermis.

In addition, the greater the variety of spot sizes,
the more flexibly the device can be used according to the area,
from narrow areas such as the face to wide areas such as the legs.
Ultimately, what matters is not determining which device is the best,
but identifying which device is appropriate
for your skin type, hair condition,
and treatment area.

the safety and satisfaction of the procedure
can vary depending on which wavelength
is used with which cooling method.
