Temporary Teeth After Implants in Songpa-dong: Why They Can Be Provided Quickly

“Can temporary teeth be placed immediately after surgery?”

These are questions frequently asked by people preparing for implant treatment.

When planning full-mouth implants, one of the greatest concerns for patients is how they will eat and go about their daily lives until treatment is complete.

This concern can feel even greater when all remaining teeth need to be extracted or when existing dentures can no longer be used, as patients may have to spend a period of time without teeth.

Today, using the case of an actual patient, I will explain when temporary teeth can be connected soon after implant placement and what conditions need to be checked for this to be possible.

This patient had been using dentures.

The device visible at the top of the photograph is the denture the patient had been using.

After removing the dentures and examining the mouth, we found that the overall condition was poor.

There was also a significant amount of tartar buildup on the dentures, and the gums around the front teeth that had supported the dentures were red and irritated.

We determined that it would be difficult for the remaining teeth to continue functioning for a long time.

Therefore, for this treatment, we planned to extract the upper and lower teeth and proceed with full-mouth implants.

At this point, it is important not only to decide where to place the implants after extracting the teeth.

We also need to consider what teeth the patient will be able to use for eating and daily life after treatment.

For this patient, the plan included not only the implant placement sites but also the temporary teeth to be used during treatment.

In many cases, patients wait several months after implant placement before the prosthetic teeth are connected.

This is because time is needed for the implants to become stably integrated with the jawbone.

However, if the bone is in good condition and the implants achieve sufficient initial stability when placed, temporary teeth may be connected from the early stage of treatment.

The temporary teeth referred to here are not the final prosthetic teeth.

You can think of them as intermediate teeth that reduce discomfort in daily life while the gums and bone around the implant sites recover.

Therefore, even after temporary teeth are connected, they must be used carefully while the implants integrate with the bone.

The bite must also be adjusted carefully so that excessive force is not placed on the temporary teeth.

For this patient, we planned guided surgery for the full-mouth implants.

Simply put, it is a device that helps ensure that the plan established before surgery is accurately implemented in the actual mouth.

For full-mouth implants, the number of implants to be placed is important, but so are the position and angle at which each implant is inserted.

This is because the position and direction of the implants can affect the position and bite of the temporary and final prosthetic teeth connected afterward, as well as the direction in which chewing forces are transferred.

Therefore, for this treatment, we made the guide by considering the positions where the implants would be placed, the direction in which the prosthetic teeth would be attached, and the bite that would result afterward—all from before surgery.

The temporary teeth to be used after treatment were also prepared in advance.

Considering the condition of the lower-jaw bone and the stability of the implants, we determined that this patient could have temporary teeth connected after implant placement.

For the lower jaw, we planned for the patient to be able to go about daily life using fixed temporary teeth connected to the implants.

In contrast, some areas of the upper jaw had poor bone quality, and inflammation was also found, making it difficult to proceed in the same way.

In this situation, rather than connecting temporary teeth forcefully, it was necessary to first treat the inflamed areas, perform bone grafting, and wait until the jawbone stabilized.

Therefore, for the upper jaw, we decided that the patient would first use temporary dentures, then continue treatment in stages after checking the condition of the bone and gums.

As this case shows, temporary teeth cannot automatically be connected simply because implants have been placed.

The most important considerations are whether the implants are sufficiently firmly stabilized in the bone and whether chewing forces will be transmitted excessively when the temporary teeth are connected.

If temporary teeth are connected forcefully while the implants are not firmly secured in the bone, this may place stress on the process of the implants settling into position.

Therefore, whether temporary teeth can be connected quickly in full-mouth implant treatment must be determined not only based on the plan made before surgery but also after checking the actual stability of the implants following placement.

In summary, full-mouth implant treatment does not mean that every area is treated at once in the same way.

Temporary teeth may be connected in areas where the bone is in good condition and the implants have sufficient stability.

However, in areas with severe inflammation or insufficient bone, it may be appropriate to allow sufficient time for recovery first and proceed in stages.

What I consider important is not how quickly the temporary teeth can be connected.

It is more important to check together whether the conditions are suitable without placing excessive stress on the implants, whether chewing forces will be transmitted excessively to one side after the temporary teeth are connected, and whether the bite is properly aligned.
