We also organized the differences between zirconia and PFM in an easy-to-understand way.

Reasons for the expanded zirconia insurance coverage
Last December, the Ministry of Health and Welfare
reviewed and approved an agenda related to expanding dental coverage.
As a result, starting February 1 of last month, zirconia was added to the implant materials covered by health insurance for people aged 65 and older!
According to the first-half 2024 analysis under the non-covered services reporting system,
zirconia accounted for 34% of the total.
Considering that implant prosthetic materials are gradually shifting to zirconia,
it was decided that health insurance would also be applied to zirconia prosthetic materials going forward.

Health insurance benefits for implants
Until 2024, dental prosthetics covered by health insurance
were limited to metal (PFM).
By contrast, zirconia was not covered by insurance,
so patients had to pay the full amount themselves.
🔻
But starting in February 2025, zirconia was also
expanded to an insurance-covered prosthetic material!
Next, let’s look at who can receive health insurance coverage for implants
and the applicable conditions.
✅Eligible for coverage
Health insurance subscribers aged 65 or older
and registered dependents
✅Out-of-pocket cost
30%, up to 2 implants per person for life
✅Coverage conditions
Partial edentulism
(If you have complete edentulism, insurance coverage may be difficult to apply.
Please consult the medical staff for exact details.)
Accordingly, zirconia is now available as an option
at a cost similar to the existing PFM.
PFM vs Zirconia
Previously, only PFM crowns were eligible for insurance coverage,
but from 2025, zirconia with excellent aesthetics
will also receive health insurance benefits,
allowing you to choose one of the two.
How are PFM and zirconia different?
| Implant material | Description |
|---|
| PFM | A prosthesis made by covering a metal frame with porcelain. It is more aesthetic than metal, but over time a metal line may appear at the gum margin, or the tooth may look dull. |
| Zirconia | A fully ceramic material with excellent durability and the ability to reproduce the most natural tooth color, but it is more expensive than PFM. |

Starting in 2025, as health insurance coverage expands,
zirconia has become available at a relatively reasonable cost as well.
Compared with the existing PFM crown, the advantages and disadvantages are clear,
so please consider your dental condition and budget
to make the best choice.
