Hello, this is Gangnam Leong Dental Clinic 😊
Today, we’re bringing you a topic that may be helpful for those whose gums have receded and whose tooth roots are exposed,
making them feel self-conscious even when they smile!

Newtis Gum Grafting
If your teeth have started to feel sensitive over time,
or if, due to gum disease or after prosthetic treatment,
you’ve become hesitant to smile broadly because of exposed tooth roots,
Newtis gum grafting may be worth considering.
Gums naturally recede as we age,
but improper brushing habits
or gum disease can accelerate this process,
and once recession occurs,
it is difficult to restore.
However, if the cause is identified
and appropriate treatment is provided,
then, after examination, if Newtis gum grafting is deemed possible,
your smile can be improved again.

Newtis Gum Grafting Procedure
How is Newtis gum grafting performed,
and how long does the treatment take?
The surgery takes about 30 minutes to 1 hour,
but depending on the degree of recession in the graft site,
it may take longer.
The detailed gum grafting procedure is as follows.
✅ Examination and Diagnosis
Before the actual gum grafting,
the gum condition is carefully examined to determine
whether gum grafting is necessary and whether it is possible.
After confirming the degree of gum recession,
as well as gum thickness and overall health,
the decision can be made whether to proceed with grafting.
✅ Splint Molding
Once surgery is decided, a splint is made
to protect the palate, where the graft tissue will be harvested during surgery.
Wearing the splint helps prevent external irritation
and applies pressure to the palate, which helps with hemostasis.
✅ Local Anesthesia
Local anesthesia is administered
at the surgical site and the palate area from which the gum tissue will be harvested.
✅ Disinfection of the Surgical Site
To prevent infection in the oral cavity,
the surgical site is disinfected with an oral antiseptic solution.
✅ Harvesting the Graft Tissue
Based on the planned treatment,
an appropriately sized piece of gum tissue is harvested from the palate.
✅ Fixation and Suturing of the Graft Tissue
The harvested gum tissue is placed at the graft site
and securely fixed using special sutures.
It is then carefully stitched.

✅ Hemostasis and Placement of Protective Pad
Once suturing is complete,
a special protective pad is applied to help prevent bleeding at the graft site and palate.
At our clinic, we use a Taper Membrane or
OraAid (an absorbent adhesive wound dressing).
✅ Recovery and Care
After surgery, recovery is carried out according to the care instructions provided,
and stitches are removed about two weeks later.
After that, follow-up examinations are conducted every month and every three months
to check the healing process.

What should you keep in mind after surgery?
For the best results after surgery,
you should keep the precautions in mind along with smooth recovery.
✅ Swelling and Pain
Swelling or pain may occur after surgery.
Cold compresses for about 2 days can help reduce them.
✅ Eating
To support recovery, avoid putting strain on the surgical area.
For about a week, avoid hot or irritating foods
and eat soft foods instead.
✅ Alcohol / Smoking
Avoid alcohol and smoking for at least 2 weeks.
These slow down recovery.
✅ Brushing
When brushing your teeth,
do so gently while avoiding the surgical area,
and if necessary, use the mouth rinse recommended by the clinic
for oral hygiene.
✅ Exercise / Bathing
Because of the risk of bleeding due to increased blood pressure,
for about a week after surgery,
avoid strenuous exercise and hot baths,
and limit yourself to a lukewarm shower.
✅ Keep Your Dental Follow-up Appointments
Keep your follow-up appointments to check your condition after surgery,
and once your recovery status has been assessed,
receive appropriate measures based on the situation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q. How long does recovery take after gum grafting?
Stitches are removed 1 to 2 weeks after surgery.
After that, it takes about 1 to 2 months for full recovery.
Q. How many visits are needed in total for gum grafting?
Examination, gum grafting surgery, stitch removal after surgery,
and regular follow-up visits to check the recovery process are necessary,
so you need to visit at least 4 to 5 times.
(This may increase depending on the patient’s condition and schedule.)
Q. Some of my gums look white after gum grafting.
During recovery, the epithelium of the grafted tissue may sometimes appear partially white.
This is part of the normal healing process,
so there is no need for major concern.
Q. How does the palate heal?
The palate area where the gum tissue was removed heals quickly,
and it takes about 3 weeks for it to recover normally.
