Hello, this is Gangnam Leon Dental Clinic😊
Have you ever felt self-conscious because too much of your gums show when you smile?
Some people are concerned not because of their teeth, but because of their gums.
Today, we’ll look at a case where a so-called “gummy smile” was treated with Newtis gum contouring
and an uneven gum line was improved.

Gummy Smile
A “gummy smile” refers to the condition where too much gum is exposed when smiling.
It is a compound word of gum + smile.
Usually, the upper lip lifts slightly and only the front teeth are naturally visible,
but with a gummy smile, more than 3 mm of gum shows,
which can make the smile feel awkward.
A normal smile, along with smiling eyes, creates a favorable impression with an appropriate balance of teeth and gums,
but a gummy smile can become a complex because the gums are overemphasized.
Causes of a Gummy Smile
If we summarize the main causes of a gummy smile, there are four:
✅Short teeth
Because the teeth themselves are short,
the proportion of gum appears relatively larger,
so the gums look more prominent when smiling.
✅Gum overdevelopment
This is when the teeth have grown normally,
but the gums have developed excessively,
making the gums stand out.
✅Upper lip muscle overactivity
When the muscle that lifts the upper lip
works too strongly,
more gums are exposed.
✅Maxillary protrusion
When the upper jaw itself protrudes,
a gummy smile can be more pronounced
than in typical cases.
Newtis Gum Contouring
A gummy smile caused by various factors
is improved with the appropriate treatment.
🔻
Non-surgical treatments include
Botox and orthodontics.
By using Botox to weaken the upper lip muscle
that lifts too much, improvement can be achieved,
or if there is a problem with the alveolar bone,
it can be alleviated through orthodontic treatment.
🔻
Surgical treatment includes
Newtis gum contouring,
which plans the ideal tooth-to-gum ratio
and improves a gummy smile
by removing part of the gums.
#CASE 01
Short teeth
This is a case where the ideal tooth proportion is disrupted due to the gums,
making the teeth look small and cramped.
Usually, the golden ratio for teeth is
width:height = 80:100.
Taking this ratio into consideration,
Newtis gum contouring was planned,
and because the tooth edge was chipped, Newtis tooth contouring was also performed
to smooth the tooth edges.

#CASE 02
Irregular gum line
Newtis gum contouring does not only improve a gummy smile.
It is also performed when an irregular gum line makes the tooth lengths look uneven
and a more neat appearance is desired.
This patient also had white spots, so along with Newtis gum contouring,
Newtis spot treatment (ICON resin) was also performed.

Will my teeth become sensitive?
Excessive treatment to the point that the teeth become sensitive is absolutely not recommended.
Sometimes right after gum contouring,
the teeth may appear more exposed than before,
so they may feel temporarily sensitive,
but the symptoms gradually improve.
Q. How long does the procedure take?
It depends on the extent,
but on average it is completed within 20 to 30 minutes.
Q. How many visits are needed?
One week after the procedure is completed,
you need to visit once more for a follow-up check.
Because the appearance immediately after the procedure and the appearance after swelling subsides are different,
we check the recovery status and confirm whether the gums are healing well.
(*Depending on recovery and the extent of individual treatment,
additional visits may be necessary.)
Newtis gum contouring is a treatment completed in a single day.
Usually, through the integrated anterior teeth treatment Newtis,
not only a single treatment but also Newtis tooth contouring, Newtis spot removal,
and Newtis teeth whitening are often performed together.
If combined treatments are needed,
for more effective and safer progress,
they may be carried out in stages after a certain period of time.
Today, we looked at gum contouring,
part of Gangnam Leon Dental Clinic’s integrated anterior teeth treatment, Newtis.
