Stitches may occasionally come undone or fall out after an extraction.

Stitches are usually removed during a checkup one week after the extraction. Although recovery speed can vary from person to person, as the gums begin to stabilize around 4–5 days after the extraction, or for various physical reasons, the knot may become loose or come undone.

Even if the stitches have completely come undone without you noticing, there is generally no need to worry. Visit on the date scheduled for removal, and have the area disinfected while checking whether any stitches remain.

However, if the sutures appear to have come undone on the day of the extraction, you should return to the dental clinic and receive appropriate treatment.

The bleeding still has not stopped

After an extraction, bite down firmly on the gauze placed over the extraction site and apply pressure to control the bleeding for about 2–3 hours. In most cases, the bleeding will stop.

Even after removing the gauze, a small amount of blood may continue to seep out. You may use the extra gauze provided to apply pressure again and control the bleeding.

Please be sure to observe the following while controlling the bleeding!

✔ Avoid using straws

✔ Do not spit out saliva or blood; swallow it if possible

✔ Avoid smoking and drinking alcohol

If the bleeding continues despite these measures, we recommend visiting the clinic for a checkup.

The discomfort generally gradually improves after about 3–4 days. Applying a cold compress for approximately 48 hours after the extraction, followed by a warm compress, may help reduce the pain.

If the discomfort and pain do not go away, it is advisable to visit the clinic for additional care, such as an examination of the temporomandibular joint.

When will the swelling go down?
