Hello, this is Gangnam Leon Dental Clinic😊
Today, we’d like to share precautions to take after wisdom tooth extraction.
If you have a wisdom tooth extraction at Gangnam Leon Dental Clinic,
we provide a set of instructions, an ice pack, and extra gauze for bleeding control,
and we also send a video by text message explaining post-extraction precautions.
After wisdom tooth extraction, there are three main things to keep in mind
for a smooth recovery:
Bleeding control / Meals / Hygiene management

Here’s how to control bleeding!
Depending on the difficulty of the wisdom tooth extraction, if the tooth is impacted,
a gum incision may be performed,
so extra attention is needed for bleeding control afterward.
① Immediately after extraction
Right after the extraction, we instruct you to place folded gauze
over the extraction site and bite down firmly for 2 hours without readjusting it.
At this time, even if saliva or blood pools in your mouth,
it is better to swallow it rather than spit it out, and do not eat anything
for initial bleeding control.
② 2 hours after extraction
After 2 hours, remove the gauze and check whether the bleeding has stopped properly.
A small amount of blood seeping through is fine.
However, if it seems like you are bleeding heavily,
perform a second round of bleeding control with the extra gauze we provided.
If heavy bleeding continues after that,
you should visit the dental clinic to have the area checked.
③ 3 to 4 days after extraction
For 3 to 4 days after extraction,
please avoid strenuous exercise, swimming, and hot baths (steam rooms/saunas)
for a smooth recovery.
Even if bleeding was controlled well at first,
these activities can increase blood flow
and negatively affect recovery,
so bleeding may start again.

Meals, drinking, smoking
When can I eat?
After wisdom tooth extraction, the wound area should be handled carefully
until it has completely healed.
A blood clot forms at the extraction site to protect the wound,
and if this clot does not fall off naturally but comes loose due to food,
pressure in the mouth, or temperature changes,
severe pain and delayed healing can occur.
This is called a 'dry socket.'
① From immediately after extraction to 24 hours
After removing the gauze you held in place for 2 hours,
once the anesthesia has worn off to some extent,
you may eat.
After eating, it is best to take all prescribed medication without skipping any doses.
However, during this period,
avoid foods that may irritate the extraction site,
such as very spicy, hot, hard, or chewy foods.
Soft foods that can be swallowed gently in the mouth,
such as lukewarm porridge, cold yogurt, and tofu,
are the best choice.
At this time, you should avoid using straws,
as they create pressure in the mouth.
② Day 2 to 3
On days 2 to 3, bleeding control has been completed,
the anesthesia has worn off, recovery is in full progress,
and swelling and pain may still remain.
Caution is still necessary,
so it is best to avoid rough, hard-to-chew foods,
and we recommend eating mainly soft foods.
③ Day 4 to 1 week
As you get closer to one week,
the pain will have decreased to some extent.
At this point, you may begin eating soft regular meals,
and eat on the side opposite the extraction site.

Can I drink alcohol or smoke❓
Please avoid alcohol and cigarettes for about a week if possible.
Alcohol dilates blood vessels,
which can cause bleeding to start again even at a site where it had already stopped,
and it can also reduce immunity,
leading to infection and inflammation of the wound area.
If that happens, the recovery period may become longer,
and additional treatment may be needed.
In fact, it is more common than you might think for people to visit the clinic after drinking following extraction,
due to delayed bleeding or severe swelling and other recovery issues.
Here’s how to manage hygiene!
Brush your teeth as usual,
but be careful not to touch the extraction site.
After meals, it is a good idea to gently rinse with water or rinse frequently
so that no food particles remain in the extraction area.
‼️
If food does get stuck,
do not rinse forcefully
or try to remove it with tools;
visit the dental clinic so it can be cleaned and removed with disinfection.
