Hello, this is Gangnam Leon Dental Clinic 😊
Today, I’d like to write about wisdom teeth again.
Quite a lot of people think:
If there’s no pain,
can’t I just leave my wisdom teeth alone?
But is that really true?
Today, let’s look at three facts about wisdom teeth
and see when and why it’s a good idea to have them extracted!

- Not all wisdom teeth
need to be extracted.
Just because it’s a wisdom tooth doesn’t mean it must always be removed.
If it has erupted normally and straight,
maintains an appropriate distance from the surrounding teeth,
and is being kept clean properly,
there is no need to extract it.
However, even if there are no symptoms at present,
if its structural position appears problematic,
preventive extraction may be necessary.

- Lower wisdom teeth
can cause problems.
In particular, lower wisdom teeth often have insufficient space
or become impacted in an abnormal direction.
Wisdom teeth that are lying horizontally or at an angle can, as they grow,
push against the adjacent tooth, damaging the neighboring tooth,
or come close to the inferior alveolar nerve inside the lower jaw gum,
making extraction more difficult.
Even if they look fine to the naked eye,
X-rays and CT scans may reveal these structural risk factors.
So based on imaging tests, we explain to patients
whether extraction is needed,
and even if there are no symptoms right away,
we recommend extraction to prevent possible future problems.

- This is the time to extract them
when there are no problems.
The best time for wisdom tooth extraction is
usually around the age of 24, before the roots have fully developed.
Because the roots have not yet firmly settled into the bone,
✔️ there is less proximity to the nerve,
and because they have not yet firmly settled into the gum,
✔️ extraction is easier.
Also, since this is the early 20s,
✔️ recovery after extraction is faster,
and ✔️ above all, problems caused by wisdom teeth
can be prevented in advance.
In other words, as time passes,
the bone becomes denser, making the procedure more difficult,
and recovery also becomes slower.
Therefore, even if there is no particular pain,
if evaluation shows that extraction is advisable,
it is better not to delay and to decide on extraction
at the appropriate time.

Wisdom teeth that have erupted normally
do not need to be removed
as long as they are being kept clean properly,
but if there is a possibility that they may cause structural problems,
preventive extraction should be considered.
Especially if the roots are not yet fully formed,
extraction is easier and recovery is faster,
so it is best to choose the timing carefully and proceed.
