Hello, this is Gangnam Leon Dental Clinic😊
When you open your mouth, one thing that is just as important as your teeth
is the gums that support them.
Because gums are so important both functionally and aesthetically,
you may end up needing major treatment if you miss the golden time.
Today, let’s look at a case where gum recession was improved
with Newtis gum grafting.

Gum recession: receding gums
Gum recession is a condition in which gum tissue is lost
and the tooth root becomes exposed,
commonly described as the gums receding.
So, what causes gum recession?
✔️ Periodontal disease
When gum inflammation caused by tartar and plaque worsens,
it can progress to periodontitis, which leads to bone loss.
✔️ Improper brushing
Brushing with too much force or using a hard toothbrush
can irritate and damage the gums,
which may contribute to gum recession.
✔️ Genetic factors
If you naturally have thin and weak gums,
they can recede easily even with minor irritation.
✔️ Prosthetic appliances
If continuous pressure is applied to the gums and gum bone
due to prosthetic appliances such as orthodontic devices,
the gums may become thinner or recede.
✔️ Aging
As we get older, the gums weaken,
and recession occurs naturally.

Types of gum grafting
The principle of gum grafting
is a surgery that reinforces deficient gums
by adding new gum tissue.
Here, the new gum tissue is usually obtained through an autograft,
using the patient’s own gum tissue.
The new gum tissue is typically harvested from the inner gum area around the molars or from the palate.
Depending on how the harvested gum tissue is grafted into the deficient area,
it is divided into two types: ▲ free gingival graft and ▲ connective tissue graft.
✅ Free gingival graft
A method in which the removed gum tissue is
transplanted as is onto the desired area,
like applying a bandage.
✅ Connective tissue graft
A method in which space is prepared for grafting at the desired area,
and after separating the gum epithelium and alveolar bone,
the epithelial tissue is removed from the harvested gum tissue
and only the connective tissue is inserted.
The dentist decides which method to use
depending on the treatment purpose and the condition of the gums.
| | Aesthetics and function |
|---|
| Free gingival graft (FGG) | Because the epithelium is grafted as is, aesthetics are somewhat lower, but it thickens and reinforces the gums well, making it excellent functionally. |
| Connective tissue graft (CTG) | By inserting the inner layer (connective tissue) beneath the needed area without the epithelium, it is suitable for restoring receded gums in the front teeth area and excels in both aesthetics and function. |

Improving gum recession with
Newtis gum grafting
This is a case of improving gum recession
through a connective tissue graft.
Connective tissue grafting blends naturally with the existing gums,
so it is especially preferred for aesthetic areas such as the front teeth.
① Local anesthesia
After assessing the condition of the receded gum area
and determining the graft area and graft size,
local anesthesia is administered.
② Harvesting the graft
The gum tissue (graft) to be transplanted inside the mouth is
harvested and then sutured.
③ Grafting and fixation of the graft
The harvested graft is transplanted to the graft area,
then stably fixed and sutured.
④ Recovery
After the procedure, the healing process is monitored and managed,
and the sutures are removed after 1 to 2 weeks.
It takes about 1 to 2 months for full recovery.

Newtis Gum Grafting Q&A
Q. Can I drink alcohol after gum grafting?
Alcohol and smoking interfere with recovery,
so it is best to avoid them for one week.
Q. The grafted area has turned white.
The area where gum grafting was performed
may sometimes look partly white
during the process of settling in.
This is part of the normal healing process,
so there is no need to worry too much.
Q. When can I eat?
It is best to wait at least 2 hours after surgery.
However, please avoid hot and irritating foods,
and it is recommended to eat soft foods for about 5 days.
Gum grafting is effective not only for improving noticeable aesthetic problems,
but also for protecting exposed tooth roots
and helping the grafted gums be well maintained again
so they can stay healthy over the long term.
