Hello, this is Gangnam Leon Dental Clinic🙂
After having a wisdom tooth extracted,
the first thing many people wonder is this.
Can I eat?
Can I drink alcohol a few days later?
Especially in the case of an impacted wisdom tooth extraction,
the procedure includes making an incision in the gum and suturing it,
so recovery management is more important than with a simple extraction.
Not only is early bleeding control important,
but if eating is not managed properly,
it can affect pain and,
in severe cases, lead to a dry socket.
Today, we’ve organized the eating guidelines by recovery stage after wisdom tooth extraction,
the timing for drinking alcohol and smoking,
and also some of the questions many patients actually ask often.

Things to Note
After wisdom tooth extraction,
for bleeding control,
you should keep the gauze in your mouth for at least 2 hours.
At this time, the most important thing is for a blood clot to
settle stably over the extraction site.
This blood clot acts as a protective layer that helps the wound heal.
If this clot comes off,
symptoms of a dry socket can occur,
accompanied by severe pain and bad odor.
Therefore, after extraction,
it is the top priority to control bleeding and prevent the blood clot from coming off.
✔️ Avoid pressure in the mouth
✔️ Avoid smoking/drinking alcohol
✔️ Avoid exercise/sauna
- Interferes with bleeding control due to increased blood flow

Eating After Wisdom Tooth Extraction
: By Recovery Stage
It is best to eat only after the anesthesia has completely worn off.
Usually, if you keep gauze in place for about 2 to 3 hours to control bleeding,
most people find that the anesthesia wears off by the time the gauze is removed.
If you eat while the anesthesia has not fully worn off,
you may bite your cheek or tongue,
and the wound area may be irritated and start bleeding.
Also, hot foods can dilate blood vessels
and cause bleeding, so they should be avoided.
Another common mistake many people make is using a straw.
When you drink through a straw,
negative pressure forms inside the mouth and the blood clot can come off.
In that case, it may progress to a very painful dry socket,
so please be careful.
✔️ Eat after bleeding has stopped / after anesthesia wears off
✔️ Avoid hot and spicy foods
✔️ Do not use a straw

🔖From the day of extraction to 24 hours after
The day of extraction is the golden time for recovery.
How you manage this period can affect the pain.
On the day itself, reduce chewing and eat mostly soft, cold, or lukewarm foods.
✅ Recommended foods
Cold foods help reduce swelling and bleeding by constricting blood vessels.
However, overly sweet foods may cause inflammation,
so eat only a moderate amount.
❌ Foods to avoid
(snacks / sesame seeds / nuts)
🔖2 to 3 days after extraction
During this period, swelling can become most severe.
Usually, swelling peaks up to 48 hours after extraction.
Although the pain has eased a little,
the inside of the gum is still healing,
so caution is still needed.
If possible, chew on the opposite side of the extraction site,
and make sure food does not enter the wound area.
✅ Recommended foods
-
Soft rice
-
Clear broth
-
Tender fish flesh
-
Egg dishes
🔖4 to 7 days after extraction
Usually, stitches are removed about a week later.
At this stage, pain decreases significantly,
and a normal diet becomes possible to some extent.
However, you should still be careful with the following foods.
⚠️ Foods to be careful with
-
Hard and chewy meat
-
Squid, etc.
It can take another 2 to 3 weeks for the gum to fully heal,
so it is not a good idea to push yourself just because it “doesn’t hurt.”

Drinking and Smoking
When can I drink alcohol?
It is best to avoid alcohol for at least one week.
Alcohol dilates blood vessels, which can cause bleeding
and worsen inflammatory responses.
In particular, if you are taking antibiotics, you must not drink alcohol at all.
There are many cases where swelling becomes severe again,
or pain worsens after drinking during recovery, leading patients to return for another visit.
When can I smoke?
We recommend not smoking for at least one week, and ideally for 2 weeks.
Smoking interferes with wound healing through the oral pressure created when inhaling,
dryness in the mouth,
and reduced blood circulation,
and is one of the major causes of dry socket.

QnA After Wisdom Tooth Extraction
✋It feels like food is stuck in the extraction site.
Can I remove it?
Do not touch it with a toothpick or your hand.
Gently rinse it out with water,
but if the food does not come out,
do not try to remove it with tools or forceful gargling;
please visit the dental clinic for removal.
✋I can’t open my mouth well.
Especially after extracting a lower impacted wisdom tooth,
the jaw muscles may become tense,
causing difficulty opening the mouth.
In most cases, this improves after about 3 to 4 days.
✋How should I brush my teeth?
Brush as usual,
but be careful around the extraction site.
Do not rinse your mouth forcefully; do it gently.
✋How long should I take the medication?
Rather than stopping on your own because the pain has decreased,
taking all the prescribed medication for the full period helps prevent inflammation.
The key to eating after wisdom tooth extraction is to do it
✔️ soft ✔️ lukewarm
✔️ slowly ✔️ without irritation
And avoiding alcohol and smoking for at least one week
has a major impact on how quickly you recover.
If you are a little careful, most people recover without major issues.
However, if the pain gets worse or you notice any unusual symptoms,
please visit the dental clinic without delay!
