Hello, this is Gangnam Leong Dental Clinic🙂
One of the treatments that patients fear and avoid the most is root canal treatment!
If you are considering root canal treatment,
you are probably already experiencing tooth pain.
Today, we will look at when root canal treatment is needed, the treatment process,
pain management after root canal treatment,
and frequently asked questions about root canal treatment.

What is root canal treatment?
Root canal treatment is a 'root canal therapy' that removes damaged nerves and infected tissue caused by cavities or fractures,
disinfects the tooth thoroughly, and fills and seals it with dental materials.
This is a natural tooth-preserving treatment
intended to save the tooth as much as possible without extracting it.
Its major advantages are that it helps prevent pain and infection
and allows you to maintain tooth function as much as possible.

When root canal treatment is needed and symptoms
Among the various reasons for root canal treatment,
the most common cause is leaving cavities untreated.
In addition, root canal treatment may be needed due to various causes and symptoms as follows.
👉 Here are the causes!
✔️ Deeply progressed cavities
Bacteria progress beyond the dentin
and invade even deeper into the pulp
✔️ Broken tooth
If a tooth is broken or cracked,
bacteria can enter the inside
and cause inflammation.
✔️ Nerve damage caused by trauma
A fall or impact accident
can put stress on the tooth and cause internal damage
✔️ Severe wear or cracks
Continuous teeth grinding, clenching habits, and similar behaviors
can cause microcracks followed by bacterial invasion
😰 Here are the symptoms!
✔️ Persistent toothache
If a tooth remains sensitive or throbs with pain,
there is a high chance that the nerve is inflamed.
✔️ Sensitivity to hot/cold foods
If your tooth feels severely sensitive or painful depending on food or drinks,
the nerve may be damaged.
✔️ Tooth discoloration
Due to nerve damage or pulp necrosis,
the tooth may gradually darken
or take on a grayish color.
✔️ Gum swelling/pus
If the gum around the tooth is swollen or there is pus,
the infection inside the root canal may be progressing.

Root canal treatment process
Root canal treatment is carried out over a certain period
by dividing it into the following steps.
The treatment period and number of visits
depend on the tooth’s location and condition,
and generally you will visit the clinic 2 to 4 times
at 1- to 2-week intervals.
The total treatment period
usually takes about one month.
① Examination and diagnosis
First, assess the extent of nerve damage
through X-rays and an oral examination
② Removal of infected nerve
Remove the infected nerve and inflamed tissue
③ Cleaning and disinfection of the root canal (nerve canal)
Clean several times
so that no bacteria or debris remain
④ Root canal filling and sealing
Fill the empty space with filling material and seal it
to block bacterial invasion
⑤ Placement of the final prosthesis
Crown placement
to restore tooth function and shape

Pain after root canal treatment
Immediately after completing root canal treatment,
the tooth and surrounding tissues may become sensitive due to irritation,
causing slight throbbing or pain.
This is a temporary and normal reaction
that occurs during the recovery process.
🟢 Normal reaction
🔻
This usually improves naturally within 2 to 3 days,
or up to one week at the longest.
❌ When caution is needed
-
Pain persists for more than one week
-
Pain gradually gets worse
-
Symptoms of inflammation such as swelling, pus, or fever
🔻
You need to visit the dental clinic for an examination.
Post-root-canal care
For stable recovery after root canal treatment,
the following methods can help.
✔️ Pain management
Control initial pain with the prescribed painkillers.
✔️ Eat soft foods
Avoid hard and chewy foods,
and eat soft foods with minimal irritation.
✔️ Maintain oral hygiene
To prevent infection and support faster recovery,
brush thoroughly, including around the treated tooth.
However, do so gently without brushing too hard.
✔️ Monitor recovery
A slight throbbing after treatment
is a normal recovery response,
but observe whether pain continues or worsens,
and if necessary, be sure to contact the dental clinic.

Root canal treatment FAQ
✋ Do I really need root canal treatment?
If inflammation or damage occurs in the nerve inside the tooth,
and it is left untreated,
pain can become severe
and the tooth may even be lost.
Root canal treatment helps save the tooth without extraction
and prevent pain and infection.
Whether it is truly necessary
should be decided only after sufficient consultation
with a dentist.
✋ Why do I need to visit the clinic so often for root canal treatment?
The treatment process explained above does not finish in one visit
and is carried out over a certain period.
This is because each step requires a recovery process
in which the tooth and surrounding tissues stabilize
and inflammation subsides.
✋ Do I have to get a crown after root canal treatment?
Because teeth become weaker after root canal treatment,
in most cases it is recommended to protect them with a crown.
✋ Can I smoke or drink alcohol?
Alcohol and smoking are major factors that delay recovery
and increase the risk of infection,
so it is better to avoid drinking and smoking for a certain period after treatment.
In particular, if you are taking medication because of pain,
you must avoid alcohol.
Many people are afraid of root canal treatment,
but in fact it is the last treatment before extraction
to relieve pain and save the tooth.
If you feel warning signs such as pain,
we recommend that you confirm accurately whether root canal treatment is really necessary
through consultation with a specialist
before proceeding.
