Hello, this is Gangnam Leong Dental Clinic 😊
A child’s teeth are not assessed based only on how straight they are.
Growth and jaw development must also be considered.
So what process does a dental clinic use
to make an orthodontic diagnosis?

1️⃣ Initial consultation and oral examination
The first step is to check
the child’s current dental condition.
✔ Tooth alignment
✔ Cavities and gum condition
✔ Direction of jaw growth
✔ Bad habits (thumb sucking, mouth breathing, etc.)

At this stage, we do not just look with the eyes;
we also check the child’s growth pattern.
👉 At this point, we determine whether orthodontic treatment is truly needed,
or whether it can be observed a little longer.

2️⃣ Detailed diagnosis (X-ray and oral data analysis)
If orthodontic treatment is judged to be necessary,
a more detailed examination is performed for a more accurate analysis.
✔ Panoramic X-ray
✔ Lateral (side view) X-ray
✔ Face and oral photography
This allows us to check areas that cannot be seen directly.
✔ Permanent tooth position
✔ Whether any teeth are impacted
✔ Jawbone growth direction
✔ Type of malocclusion
👉 Even if everything looks fine on the outside,
problems may already be progressing inside.

3️⃣ Taking dental impressions (model creation)
To accurately analyze the child’s teeth,
a dental impression is taken or a 3D scan is performed.
✔ Analysis of tooth size and space
✔ Prediction of tooth movement direction
✔ Checking the bite
👉 This process is essential for creating an actual orthodontic treatment plan.

4️⃣ Explanation of the orthodontic diagnosis results and treatment plan
Once all examinations are complete,
we explain the orthodontic plan that fits the child.
✔ Whether treatment is needed
✔ When to start
✔ Expected treatment duration
✔ Which orthodontic appliance will be used
✔ Cost and precautions
👉 Because each child grows at a different rate,
even children of the same age may need treatment at different times.
💡 When is children’s orthodontic treatment needed?
If any of the following apply,
we recommend an orthodontic consultation.
✔ Severely crooked teeth
✔ Protruding front teeth (protrusion)
✔ The upper and lower teeth do not meet properly
✔ The jaw is偏 to one side
✔ A habit of breathing through the mouth
👉 This is not just a cosmetic issue
and can lead to growth and functional problems.
📝 Closing
For children’s orthodontics,
what matters more than “when to start” is
👉 “Starting at the right time with an accurate diagnosis.”
Because a child’s teeth are still growing,
early detection can make the problem easier to resolve.
If there is anything that worries you, even a little,
we recommend starting with a simple examination 😊
