I’m Kim Han-gyeol, the chief director of Smile View Dental Clinic, here to give you “the beautiful smile that suits you best.”
As the cooler weather gradually softens and spring approaches, more and more patients have been coming in for consultations on aesthetic dental treatment to match the spring season, when outdoor activities increase.
In particular, with laminate veneers being mentioned a lot recently on a well-known YouTube channel, many people have been coming in saying they want the same type of veneers that celebrities get.
Today, while talking about why celebrity laminates are so popular and the “advantages of laminates,” I’ll also look at possible side effects and who the treatment is suitable for.
What Are Celebrity Laminates?
The definition of laminates and who they are for

Definition of laminates
Laminates are a treatment in which artificial teeth are made thin like a fingernail and attached over your natural teeth.
This type of laminate treatment is one of the aesthetic procedures mainly performed when the front teeth become especially noticeable when smiling brightly, or when the teeth are irregularly aligned.
That is why many people who worry about how they look because of their front teeth when smiling often look into this treatment.
Recommended candidates for laminates
Unless it is clear aligners, orthodontic treatment requires wearing noticeable braces for a long period of time.
However, laminates can be completed relatively faster than orthodontic treatment, so they are often preferred by celebrities and influencers, for whom appearance is important.
In addition, laminate treatment is performed in the following four cases:
-
When the front teeth are overlapping or there is spacing between teeth, resulting in poor alignment
-
When the teeth are too large, too small, or uneven in size
-
When the front teeth are chipped or not aesthetically pleasing due to a previous procedure
-
When the teeth are severely discolored and permanent whitening is desired
However, even if you fall into one of these cases, laminate treatment may not be recommended because each person’s gums, teeth, and oral structure are different.
For this reason, we recommend deciding whether to proceed with laminate treatment only after consulting the attending medical team.
What Are the Disadvantages of Celebrity Laminates?
Be careful about excessive tooth reduction!
As mentioned earlier, laminates seem like they would only have advantages because they can solve problems with tooth shape, alignment, and whitening in a short amount of time, but every treatment has both advantages and disadvantages.

Because porcelain laminate tips are attached to natural teeth, some reduction of the natural tooth is necessary first. If too much tooth structure is removed, the treated teeth may later become sensitive.
Also, since porcelain laminate tips attached to natural teeth are weaker than natural teeth, frequently eating hard foods or receiving irritation later on can lead to the laminates cracking or coming off.
In particular, treatments such as implants, dentures, and laminates should be understood as semi-permanent rather than completely permanent.

For that reason, even if laminate treatment is performed very precisely, neglecting tooth and gum care afterward can make cavities more likely and worsen gum health, which may require additional treatment.
These days, many dental clinics advertise “no-prep laminates,” making it seem as though no tooth reduction is done at all.
However, just as everyone has different face shapes and facial features, teeth are also different. Oral structures and tooth shapes vary from person to person, so treatment cannot be done in a factory-like way.
In other words, because treatment is carried out based on each individual’s dental condition, laminates cannot simply be done whenever someone wants them.
That is why we strongly recommend checking the clinician’s experience and clinical expertise.
